Donorbox vs. Zeffy vs. 4aGoodCause: An Honest Comparison
Choosing the right fundraising platform is one of the biggest decisions a nonprofit can make, and it’s important to understand your options.
If you’ve researched Donorbox or Zeffy, you’ve probably noticed they take very different approaches. Donorbox offers solid fundraising features with transparent pricing and international support. Zeffy markets itself as an all-in-one fundraising platform that is “free” to the nonprofit itself but relies on donor tips to fund their platform costs.
Both Donorbox and Zeffy are legitimate platforms that serve different nonprofit needs. The question is whether either one fits where your organization is and where you’re headed.
In this article, I’ll walk you through all the important differentiators of these two platforms so you can make the best decision for your nonprofit.

Donorbox vs. Zeffy: Pros and cons
Although I created the 4aGoodCause fundraising platform (and therefore, naturally have some bias) I can still honestly say that both Donorbox and Zeffy are well-designed fundraising tools that offer valuable features.
Donorbox positions itself as a feature-rich platform with transparent pricing. Zeffy markets itself as an all-in-one platform that is “free” thanks to donor tips.
Here’s a closer look at how they compare, with more details below.

Shared strengths of Donorbox and Zeffy
Here’s what both platforms offer:
Online donation forms with customizable branding
Recurring donation options
Event ticketing with registration forms and attendee management
Peer-to-peer fundraising campaigns
Mobile-responsive donation pages
Donor engagement features and automated tax receipts
Both of these platforms are fundraising-first, not CRM-first—meaning that while they have some basic CRM capabilities, donor data and engagement features are not as robust as what you might see in a CRM-first platform like Bloomerang or Little Green Light.
And while both Zeffy and Donorbox have recurring giving features available, they were primarily designed for fundraising campaigns and events, not specifically to help nonprofits grow their monthly giving programs.
⭐️ What if there’s an easier way to maximize donations? There is. It’s called recurring monthly giving, and it generates 2.4X more revenue on average than one-time gifts. And our Monthly Giving Toolkit simplifies the whole program.
Donorbox: Features and limitations
Donorbox has built a reputation as a feature-rich fundraising platform with strong international support and transparent percentage-based pricing.
It’s especially popular with organizations that need to accept donations in multiple currencies and want to connect their own Stripe account (so you own your processing, not the platform).
Donorbox’s standout features
Strong international support (44 currencies)
A variety of payment options for donations: all major credit/debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Amex, Discover), digital wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Venmo), and ACH/bank transfers
Kiosk for in-person giving
More robust CRM and donor management compared to Zeffy
You connect your own Stripe account (not merchant of record)
Text-to-donate capabilities
Some noteworthy limitations
Donorbox charges percentage-based platform fees (1.75-3.95%) that scale with your fundraising, plus payment processing costs, making it a more expensive option than Zeffy. As far as customer service goes, Donorbox doesn’t offer phone support, only live chat and email.
Auction and raffle features are not natively part of Donorbox; if you need that functionality, you’ll have to connect to an external platform.
When thinking through Donorbox vs. Zeffy specifically, each platform has features that set it apart. Here’s what makes Zeffy attractive to nonprofits:
Zeffy’s standout features
Covers all processing fees (including credit card fees) via donor tip collection
No upfront cost for nonprofits to use
Offers event ticketing, auctions, raffles, and lotteries
Online store capabilities for selling merch
Simple email marketing tools and user-friendly CRM capabilities
Some noteworthy limitations:
Zeffy lacks advanced monthly giving management tools, donor self-service portals, and processing ownership. The lack of payment processing ownership is important because that means your nonprofit doesn’t actually own your donor tokens, which can cause problems if your technology ever glitches or you decide to switch platforms. More on that below.
While Zeffy does accept most major payment methods, they don’t have a native integration with Venmo or Paypal.

Alternative option: 4aGoodCause (4aGC)
Might I suggest another option?
My team and I built 4aGoodCause to prioritize a few crucial things:
Ease of use for non-technical teams
Pricing transparency (flat monthly fees, no platform per-transaction fees)
Personal, free, and easily accessible customer support
Starting and growing a successful monthly giving program
Donor tips go to your organization, not the platform
You own your payment processing and recurring donor data
High donation page conversions (27% average conversion rate vs the 11% industry average)
4aGC offers all the essentials of modern nonprofit fundraising software, enhanced with smarter tools and personal support to help you grow monthly giving with ease.
You’ve likely already heard the buzz: It’s paramount for your nonprofit to have a monthly giving program.
Not only is it an essential component of nonprofit fundraising strategy, but it also delivers impressive results.
North American nonprofits generated 2.4X more revenue through recurring givers than single gift donors in 2023.
In fact, the average monthly donor gives $660 per year with the 4aGoodCause platform. And while the 2025 M+R Benchmarks Study mentions the average recurring monthly donation for nonprofits is $24, we’ve found that the 4aGoodCause’s monthly giving average is $55 per month.
While Donorbox and Zeffy offer smart features for general fundraising, 4aGC makes it easier to raise more while doing less—so you can put your saved time and energy back into your mission.

The critical issue nobody talks about: Merchant of record
Before we dive into pricing models and feature comparisons, there’s something you need to understand about how these platforms handle your money.
This isn’t the flashy stuff that makes it into marketing materials, but it’s arguably the most important differentiator, especially if you’re building a monthly giving program.
What does “merchant of record” mean?
When a platform acts as your merchant of record (like Zeffy does), they own the payment processor account that handles your donations.
Here’s what that means in practice:
Your organization’s name doesn’t appear on donor credit card statements—Zeffy’s does
You cannot access or export your recurring donor payment tokens
If you leave the platform, you cannot take your monthly donor payment information with you
The platform holds your money before distributing it to you (sometimes with multi-day delays)
This is not just hypothetical; it actually happened when a fundraising platform called Flipcause filed for bankruptcy. When Flipcause went belly up, they withheld $29 million of donations from nonprofits. Even with current legal proceedings in motion, it seems unlikely that these nonprofits will recover the full amount owed by Flipcause.
In my opinion, your nonprofit should own the processing because you need to be in control of the money flow to your organization. You want to be the one processing the card so that your name appears on the donor’s credit card statement.
Why this matters for monthly giving
Let’s say you’ve built a monthly donor program with 100 recurring donors on Zeffy. You’ve worked hard to acquire these donors, nurtured them, and built trust.
Now you want to switch platforms.
Here’s the problem: You cannot take those payment tokens with you. You’ll need to ask all 100 monthly donors to re-enter their credit card information on your new platform.
In fundraising terms, that could be catastrophic. Many won’t do it. Some will forget. Others will interpret the request as suspicious. You’ll lose donors you worked hard to acquire.
When your fundraising platform controls your payment processing, you’re trusting them to hold and distribute that money to your organization.
How Donorbox and 4aGoodCause handle payment processing differently
Both Donorbox and 4aGoodCause let you connect your own Stripe account (or Authorize.net for 4aGC).
This means:
Your organization is the merchant of record
Your name appears on donor credit card statements
You own your recurring donor tokens
If you ever leave, your monthly donor data stays with you in your Stripe account
With 4aGoodCause, all your monthly giving payment data is stored in the payment gateway. There’s no interruption if you leave. But with Donorbox, there would be manual work required to reset the monthly charging schedule.
This is a fundamental difference. It means your monthly giving program is portable and protected—it belongs to you, not your fundraising platform.

How much does each platform actually cost?
Donorbox is transparent about its percentage-based fees. Zeffy markets itself as “zero cost” but relies on donor tips. Here’s an honest breakdown.
Donorbox allows nonprofits to enable an optional tipping feature where donors can add a 10–20% tip to support the platform. This allows the organization to waive the 2.95%–3.95% platform fee on the standard plan, but payment processing fees still apply. But these extra percentages will add up quickly for a nonprofit doing multiple campaigns throughout the year. (Think thousands of dollars.)
Zeffy’s pricing explained
Zeffy advertises itself as a free fundraising platform. What that actually means: Zeffy covers the credit card processing fees and platform costs through optional donor tips.
But here’s what many nonprofits miss: Those tips default to 15-17% and are pre-selected at checkout.
According to Zeffy’s own data, around 60% of donors give a donor tip.
However, you’re unable to customize the percentages offered for tipping with Zeffy. The platform sets them automatically and adjusts based on payment types and processing fees.
What nonprofits actually pay with Zeffy:
Direct cost to nonprofit: zero fees to use the platform
Hidden cost: Donor tips are pre-set to 15-17% at checkout
Risk cost: Merchant of record means you don’t own your recurring donor tokens
Donor frustration cost: Many donors feel misled when they discover the “optional” tip factor
There are no separate payment processing fees for Zeffy, as they are covered by the donor tips that the platform collects.

4aGoodCause’s pricing explained
4aGoodCause uses a completely different model: flat monthly pricing tiers with no platform transaction fees.
Grassroots Plan: $99/month (process up to $40K/year online)
Growing Plan: $199/month (process up to $200K/year online)
You only pay credit card processing fees (Stripe 2.2% + $0.30 or similar—remember, you can bring your own payment processor with you at 4aGoodCause), and donor tips go to your organization—not the platform.
There’s no percentage taken from your donations, which means:
Predictable budgeting as you grow
More money staying with your mission
All donor tips benefit your cause
All advanced features included (no upsells)
One more critical difference: You’re never locked in. Cancel anytime, and your payment processing relationship and donor data stays with you. See full pricing details here.

I appreciate the continuous improvement you and your team provide. I especially appreciate the passive fundraising option for [event registration] campaigns. We don't want to charge admission but are happy to accept offered donations, and this amount is $650 for the year. I'm a fan!

Here’s what real users think about Donorbox vs. Zeffy vs. 4aGoodCause
If you check out software review sites, both platforms have solid overall ratings and helpful feedback for the teams about what needs improvement.
But a few online reviews and discussions highlight important pain points you should know about.
What users say about Donorbox
Reviews of Donorbox are overall positive with users focusing on the ease of use and quick set up of the platform.
In her review on Capterra, Stephanie M. mostly praises the product as “a compelling balance of usability, features, and affordability.” She likes that it has the option of setting up recurring donations, but wishes the forms had more customization options. She also notes the increased price over time, which is just reality when you’re working with a fundraising platform that charges based on a percentage model.
Stephanie M.'s review
Sadoki Y.’s review on G2 expresses similar themes: easy set up but lack of advanced features (unless you pay for more expensive plans) and transaction fees that add up over time.
Sadoki Y.'s review
Overall, Donorbox is a solid fundraising platform (especially for nonprofits who have an international presence), as long as you are aware of the potential cost creep of continuing to use the tool as your organization grows.
What users say about Zeffy
Zeffy scores really well on review sites, and users are especially drawn to the fact that the platform is “free.” It’s a true selling point for nonprofits. Users tend to note that tension: They wish Zeffy had more features and better integrations, but how can you complain about something that is free (at least to the nonprofit)?
Confusion around donor tips is a real concern that comes up often in user feedback.
In her G2 review, Beth B. says she doesn’t have any way to even know how much donors are tipping, which makes understanding the true financial cost of the platform impossible. She doesn’t know if their donors are under-paying or over-paying for the platform costs and has no way to find out.
Beth B.'s review
And Carrie B. via Capterra notes: “Our event is $400 per registration, so the form defaulting to add another $40+ is very misleading and possibly upsetting to our registrants.”
According to Samantha Z., in her Capterra review, there is no actual option for donors to say “no” to adding a tip on Zeffy; instead, they have to select “other.” This is legitimately confusing and can be a real sticking point for nonprofits who are trying to build trust with their donors.
Samantha Z.'s review
The donor tip feature is a real issue, but it is also the only way Zeffy is able to be “free” to nonprofits. So it’s a bit of a golden handcuffs situation.
For small nonprofits running limited fundraising events, I can see how Zeffy could be a great way to get started. But as a long-term fit, you’ll eventually have to confront some of these cons.

What users say about 4aGoodCause
4aGoodCause gets consistent good reviews from nonprofit organizations who praise the platform for its ease of use, responsive and personal customer service, and custom fundraising pages that prioritize the donor experience.
Kelly M’s review on Capterra talks about how quick the setup process is, as well as how much she appreciates being able to easily customize campaigns and fundraising pages:
Kelly M.'s review
One theme we see often across 4aGoodCause reviews is the value of working with a true fundraising partner who understands both strategy and execution. David Andrews, Station Manager at KJOL, shares the measurable impact of that partnership—a 300% increase in monthly donations:
“
Working with 4aGC has been great! I would highly recommend. Our online monthly donations have gone up 300% since we started working with them. They listen to feedback and ideas and even implement them.. Tech support has been breezy and prompt. It's the personal touch that sets them apart from the rest.
Dave Andrews
Station Manager at KJOL
That kind of monthly giving growth doesn’t happen with platforms that simply add a checkbox to donation forms. It requires purpose-built tools for managing, communicating with, and stewarding monthly donors—features 4aGoodCause has prioritized from the beginning.
Both platforms serve legitimate use cases. The right choice depends on where your organization is now and where you’re headed. Here are scenarios where each platform makes sense:
When Donorbox might be a good fit
International fundraising: If you need strong currency support (44 currencies) and multiple global payment methods, Donorbox excels here.
Organizations with budget for percentage fees: If you can absorb 1.75-3.95% platform fees (depending on which plan you choose) plus processing costs, Donorbox provides solid features.
Feature-rich needs: If you want events, P2P, memberships, and kiosk giving all in one platform, Donorbox has more in-depth features than Zeffy.
Processing ownership matters: You connect your own Stripe account, so you maintain control over recurring donor tokens.
If you have the budget for it, Donorbox has more functionality as a donation platform than Zeffy, and that could make it the right choice for your team. One caveat: keep costs in mind as you scale. With a percentage-based plan, your costs can increase dramatically over time, especially compared to flat-rate plans.
When Zeffy might be a good fit
Brand-new or very small nonprofits: If you’re just starting out or raising less than $1,000 monthly with no plans to build a monthly donor program, Zeffy’s zero upfront cost reduces risk while you test fundraising campaigns.
Seasonal or one-off campaigns: For occasional fundraisers like a holiday drive or annual gala, the absence of monthly fees makes sense for short-term efforts.
Events-only organizations: If you’re primarily running ticketed events with no recurring revenue strategy, Zeffy’s event tools might suffice.
For small teams that are just getting started with their fundraising efforts, Zeffy could be a good place to start. Just understand the platform trade-offs—donor tip confusion, merchant of record risks, and limited monthly giving depth.
When 4aGoodCause might be a smart alternative
Monthly giving is a priority: If building a reliable base of recurring donors is central to your strategy—not an afterthought—4aGoodCause is built around that goal. The average recurring gift on the platform is $55/month, more than double the $24/month industry benchmark.
You want flat, predictable pricing: If percentage-based fees make budgeting unpredictable as you grow, 4aGC’s flat monthly pricing means your costs don’t scale with your success. All features are included—no tiered plans, no per-user charges.
Donation page performance matters: If you’re working hard to drive traffic, you want a platform that converts. 4aGC donation pages average a 27% conversion rate—more than double the 11% industry benchmark—with nearly 100 best practices built in from day one.
You want to own your donor data: Recurring donor billing information is stored in your payment gateway, not locked inside the platform. If you ever need to switch software, your monthly donors go with you.
Personal support is non-negotiable: If you’d rather talk to a real person who understands nonprofit fundraising than submit a support ticket and wait, 4aGC operates as a partner, not just a platform.
You want to make the most of the traffic you already have. Donation pages on 4aGoodCause convert an average of 27% of visitors, compared to the 11% industry benchmark.
Donorbox vs. Zeffy vs. 4aGoodCause: What makes sense for you?
I’ve been supporting nonprofits for over 25 years, and truly, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to fundraising software.
Here’s a quick roundup, based on my experience:

Choose Donorbox if: You’re a larger nonprofit and need international support and more features and have the budget for percentage-based pricing
Choose 4aGoodCause if: Building monthly giving is a priority alongside your traditional fundraising efforts and you want flat pricing, with donor tips going directly to your cause.
While Zeffy works for very small or seasonal campaigns and Donorbox serves international and feature-rich needs, 4aGoodCause supports long-term fundraising success through:
Transparent flat-fee pricing structure (no platform transaction fees)
Optional donor tips that go to your organization—not the platform
Customized fundraising pages that follow best practices
Monthly Giving Toolkit that helps you start and grow a successful recurring giving program
