Blackbaud vs. Bloomerang vs. 4aGoodCause: Which is Right for Your Nonprofit?
The donor management system you choose will touch every aspect of your fundraising—from the donation forms your supporters see, to the real-time reports your board reviews, to the hours your team spends segmenting and managing.
Get it right, and you’ll have a platform that makes donor relationships easier to nurture, campaigns simpler to launch, and your team’s work more efficient. That’s the goal.
Blackbaud and Bloomerang are both well-established players in the nonprofit tech space, and both come with premium pricing that reflects their focus on larger, more established organizations. Where they differ is in their approach: One offers an all-encompassing enterprise ecosystem built over decades, while the other provides a streamlined, modern CRM experience designed around donor retention.
Which one is best for you? That depends on what your nonprofit specifically needs. And I’d also like to offer an alternative for small to midsize nonprofits: 4aGoodCause (but more on that later).
A quick note on Blackbaud: Blackbaud is actually a corporate umbrella that includes multiple nonprofit software products—Raiser’s Edge NXT (their flagship CRM), Financial Edge (accounting software), Luminate (formerly Convio, for online fundraising), and TeamRaiser (peer-to-peer fundraising), among others. Throughout this article, we’ll use “Blackbaud” and “Raiser’s Edge NXT” interchangeably since Raiser’s Edge is their most well-known and widely-used donor management platform—the product most people mean when they say “Blackbaud.”

Blackbaud vs. Bloomerang vs. 4aGoodCause: Pros and cons
Let’s start with the basics. Blackbaud and Bloomerang are both donor management platforms that have earned their place in the nonprofit software space.
Blackbaud has been around since before the internet really got commercialized. They’ve been the dominant force in nonprofit software for decades, primarily known for their Raiser’s Edge NXT CRM, which is a comprehensive, enterprise-level donor database originally built as desktop software and later adapted for online use.
Bloomerang is a more modern web-based platform built from the ground up for online fundraising. It’s designed with a cleaner interface, easier usability, and a focus on donor retention metrics that help nonprofits build better relationships with their supporters.
Here’s a closer look at how they compare.
Shared strengths of Blackbaud and Bloomerang
Here’s what both platforms offer:
Core donor database and CRM functionality targeted to large nonprofits
Contact management and donor segmentation
Donation tracking and extensive custom reporting
A variety of payment options, including Apple Pay, PayPal, Venmo, Google Pay, Android Pay, and all major credit cards
Unique features
When thinking through Blackbaud vs. Bloomerang specifically, each platform has distinct characteristics and strengths.
Blackbaud (Raiser’s Edge NXT):
Comprehensive enterprise ecosystem available with modules for grant management, accounting (Financial Edge), tuition management, fundraising outreach (Luminate), and more
Extensive reporting capabilities—you can get virtually any type of custom report you can imagine
Built for large, multi-departmental organizations with complex relationship management needs
Bloomerang:
Built as a cloud-based platform from day one, with a modern and intuitive dashboard
Strong focus on donor retention metrics and engagement scores
Recently added full suite of online fundraising tools including donation forms, crowdfunding, peer-to-peer, and event management (Bloomerang Fundraising)
Strong integration ecosystem including direct connections to email marketing platforms (Mailchimp, Constant Contact), accounting software (QuickBooks), and Zapier for connecting to thousands of other tools
⭐️ What if there’s an easier way to maximize donations? There is. It’s called recurring monthly giving, and it generates 2.4X more revenue on average than one-time gifts. And our Monthly Giving Toolkit simplifies the whole program.
Missing or limited functionality of Blackbaud and Bloomerang
While both platforms offer robust CRM capabilities, there are important limitations to consider.
Blackbaud challenges:
Notoriously complex and difficult to learn—the interface hasn’t fully transitioned from its desktop software roots
Expensive, with costs escalating as you add modules (can reach tens of thousands of dollars per year for larger organizations)
Weak online fundraising tools—donation forms can be clunky, hard to customize, and unreliable (some don’t work properly in certain browsers)
Locked into Blackbaud’s payment processing—you can’t bring your own processor or shop for better rates
Limited integration with modern tools—doesn’t natively connect with Zapier or many third-party platforms. While Blackbaud offers SKY API (their developer platform for custom integrations), it requires dedicated technical resources to implement, which is a barrier for most small to mid-size nonprofits.
Bloomerang challenges:
Priced per contact, which means it gets more expensive as your donor database grows
Locked into Bloomerang’s payment processing (Stripe)—can’t bring your own processor
Has now become an “all-in-one” platform trying to be everything, which can mean higher costs and complexity
Learning curve can still be steep for organizations new to Bloomerang CRM software
Customer support is tiered. Chat support is included, but access to phone support and higher-touch service comes at an additional cost.
Alternative option: 4aGoodCause (4aGC)
Both Blackbaud and Bloomerang are software solutions designed for larger organizations with enterprise budgets—and they can be good solutions for that audience.
But if you’re a small to mid-size nonprofit looking at those price tags and feature sets and thinking “this feels like overkill,” you’re not alone.
My team and I built 4aGoodCause specifically for organizations that need sophisticated fundraising tools and a sturdy donor CRM without enterprise-level complexity or costs. We prioritized a few crucial things:
Nearly 100 built-in donation page best practices to help maximize donor conversion (4aGoodCause pages convert an average of 27% of visitors, compared to the 11% industry benchmark)
Predictable, transparent pricing (simple flat fee, not based on your database size)
The freedom to bring your own payment processor and keep costs low
Ease of use for non-technical teams
Personal, free customer support (not a ticketing system)
Customizable fundraising pages that offer a beautiful, clear user experience (UX) and industry best practices
That last point matters more than you might think. While platforms like Blackbaud and Bloomerang offer monthly giving as a feature among dozens of others, we built 4aGC around it as a core strategy, so you can weave it in alongside classic fundraising methods easily.
“
What we really liked about the system was the simple yet fully functional capabilities of the system and its low cost, $1,000 per year. However, the most significant benefit is the customer service that the company provides. They held our hand throughout the implementation and made it extremely easy to implement in just a few days.

The real cost of Blackbaud, Bloomerang, and 4aGoodCause
Okay, let’s talk numbers.
Understanding the true cost of these nonprofit CRMs requires looking beyond the monthly platform fee. You need to consider payment processing, implementation, onboarding, additional modules, and whether you have the flexibility to shop for better processing rates.
Blackbaud’s pricing explained
Blackbaud doesn’t publicly list pricing on their website. Based on industry reports and user feedback:
Base subscription typically starts at $4,000-$8,000+ per year for small to mid-size organizations
Each additional module (Financial Edge, TeamRaiser, Luminate, etc.) adds thousands more
Large organizations can easily spend tens of thousands annually
You’re locked into Blackbaud’s payment processing—no option to bring your own processor
Payment processing rates are whatever Blackbaud charges—no shopping around
Implementation and training costs can add thousands more
Bloomerang’s pricing explained
Bloomerang’s website includes “starting prices,” but how much you will actually end up paying depends on the number of constituent records in your donor database, as well as if you’re just using the CRM or adding on the volunteer features and fundraising suite.
Bloomerang CRM starts around $125/month and increases as your database grows
You’re locked into Bloomerang’s payment processing
Processing fees are typically 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction + an added 1% fee for peer-to-peer fundraising transactions
Additional costs to add on Bloomerang Volunteer and Bloomerang Fundraising
But based on my conversations with nonprofits evaluating the platform, organizations are typically investing somewhere between $5,000 and $12,000 (or more) per year.

That’s the software cost. And all advanced features are included.
Like Blackbaud and Bloomerang, there are payment processing costs—but where we differ is that we allow you to bring your own payment processing relationship. That gives you freedom to find the lowest-cost option that works best for your nonprofit.
It also means you own your donor information.
That doesn’t make headlines, but in my opinion, it’s one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a fundraising platform, especially if you’re building a monthly giving program and focusing on long-term donor engagement.
When a donor sets up a recurring gift, their payment information is stored as a token in a payment processor. If you ever decide to switch platforms, the ability to take those monthly donors with you depends entirely on who owns that payment account.
4aGoodCause lets you bring your own Stripe account or Authorize.net account. Your recurring donor relationships live in your payment processor, which means if you ever move, your monthly giving program moves with you. It’s seamless.
With Blackbaud and Bloomerang, the underlying merchant account belongs to the platform, not your organization. I’ve seen this create real problems.
When a payment account freeze happens and the platform owns the processor, you’re at the mercy of their support team to fix it (instead of being able to deal directly with the payment processor). If customer service is not their strong suit, you’ve got a problem.
And if you ever decide to switch platforms, you don’t just get to take your recurring donors payment information with you. For nonprofits with active monthly giving programs, that’s not a position you want to be in.
💡Fun fact:All donor tips through 4aGoodCause go directly to your organization—not the platform.

Only wish we hadn't taken so long to sign up and implement online giving with 4aGoodCause. Frankly, we didn't think our small Foundation could afford online giving software because we had been researching the larger Blackbaud-type, institutional giving platforms that were fairly expensive.
Once we asked for referrals, we discovered plenty of Atlanta clients that we knew and they shared their positive experiences. We were surprised at how quickly everything was to set up and appreciate the automatic donor acknowledgments and emails.
Appreciate the fact that they could also coordinate the merchant services, settlement part of the transactions which made everything easy for us.
The functionality has been exactly what our new Foundation needed to give the convenience of online donations and a positive donor experience. It's easy to see why 4aGoodCause was highly rated and recommended by other users in our market. The software was easy to set up and Ronald was available to answer any questions we had.

What do real users think?
If you check out software review sites, both platforms have their fans—but also some consistent pain points that emerge from user feedback.
Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge NXT reviews tend to describe it as “a lot”—users acknowledge it’s comprehensive and can generate virtually any report imaginable, but they consistently note it’s complicated, expensive, and difficult to learn.
Jocelyn W.’s Capterra review summarizes what seems to be a pretty consistent user experience—so much complexity that it’s hard to take full advantage of the platform, as well as some serious limitations in terms of automations and integration with other software (like MailChimp and Constant Contact).
Jocelyn W.’s review
Jacqueline V., a business manager, complains about customer service, or lack thereof. When there’s an issue, she says “it’s like 20 companies all pointing their finger at each other…impossible to resolve problems.”
An anonymous reviewer who works in higher education says in a G2 review: “The tools aren’t as helpful if you don’t use all of the products and transition is messy unless you had a large budget/team to handle it. The implementation was difficult and still happening years after the transition.”
For a platform that’s been in the industry for decades, Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge NXT still struggles with usability issues, clunky donation forms, and a complexity that feels more legacy than modern.
Bloomerang reviews are generally positive, with users consistently describing it as “easy to use” and appreciating the modern, intuitive interface that doesn’t require extensive training. The most common complaints center on cost.
In her Capterra review, Kylee L. talks about the advantage of the Zapier integration, allowing Bloomerang to connect easily with other software. But she notes the additional costs if you want to use volunteer or fundraising features, which can be frustrating.
Kylee L.'s review
From user reviews, it seems that Bloomerang is legitimately easier to use than platforms like Blackbaud, with solid customer support and a modern interface. But for small to mid-size nonprofits, database-based pricing that increases over time can create budget challenges as you grow.
4aGoodCause User Reviews
4aGoodCause reviews consistently highlight ease of use, transparent pricing, and personal customer support.
A common theme across reviews is that 4aGoodCause provides exactly what small to mid-size nonprofits actually need—without overwhelming them with enterprise features they’ll never use.
Users consistently note that they can accomplish everything essential for their organization without the complexity or cost of larger platforms, like this review from Jeff Miller, president of Pueblo Web Design:
“
4aGoodCause not only looks much prettier than other donation pages, it incorporates more features than I've ever seen in one program. My clients have found the campaigns easy to create and customize too. I appreciate the one-on-one demonstration and support. Overall it was easy to set-up, it generates more donations, and my clients love it.
Jeff Miller
President, Pueblo Web Design
Users frequently highlight the personal customer support as a standout feature, noting that they get responses from real people who actually understand their questions, not ticketed support queues or automated responses. It’s the kind of support experience that reflects 4aGoodCause’s small-business roots rather than enterprise infrastructure.
Can 4aGoodCause work alongside Blackbaud or Bloomerang?
Yes! We actually have clients who use 4aGoodCause alongside one of these software platforms.
If you’re currently using Blackbaud or Bloomerang as your donor database, you can absolutely use 4aGoodCause as your fundraising layer—especially if you’re unhappy with their donation forms, processing fees, or fundraising capabilities.
However, for some small to midsize nonprofits, 4aGC’s lighter, simplified donor CRM is all you need to manage all your donor data, making us an excellent all-in-one solution that’s hassle-free and great on price.
Integrating with Blackbaud
Unlike most modern SaaS platforms, Blackbaud operates as a largely closed ecosystem. They don’t have a direct integration with Zapier, and connections to popular tools require third-party middleware solutions like Omatic Software.
This isn’t an oversight—it’s strategic. Blackbaud’s business model is built around offering a comprehensive suite of products for every nonprofit need. Need accounting? They have Financial Edge. Need online fundraising? They have Luminate.
The challenge is that integrating Blackbaud products with tools outside their ecosystem requires specialized integration platforms, which adds both complexity and cost.
For example, if you want to sync Raiser’s Edge NXT with Trello or connect your donor data to external email marketing platforms like Mailchimp, you’ll likely need to purchase and configure third-party integration software.
For large organizations already committed to the Blackbaud ecosystem across multiple departments, this may be acceptable. But for small to mid-size nonprofits who want flexibility to choose best-in-class tools for different needs, this closed approach can feel limiting.
Where using Blackbaud and 4aGoodCause makes the most sense is if you’re happy with Blackbaud’s CRM (and truly need all of that complex functionality), but you want to pair it with 4aGoodCause’s best-in-class fundraising capability.
📈 Designed to convert.
What if your donation pages included nearly 100 built-in donation page best practices to help maximize giving? With 4aGC, it’s possible.
4aGC vs Industry Benchmarks: 27% conversion vs 11%; $281 average one-time gift vs $126; $55 monthly gifts vs $24.
More donors. More revenue. More sustainable fundraising
This approach gives you streamlined and better-performing donation forms, fundraising campaigns, peer-to-peer fundraising, event management, and the freedom to use your own payment processor.
Bloomerang takes a more open approach to integrations than Blackbaud. They recognize that nonprofits often use multiple specialized tools, so they’ve built direct connections to platforms like Zapier, which opens up integration possibilities with thousands of other applications.
This makes the technical side of integrating 4aGoodCause with Bloomerang more straightforward. You can set up automated workflows through Zapier to sync donation data from 4aGC into Bloomerang’s CRM without manually exporting and importing spreadsheets.
Where this integration makes the most sense:
You’re using Bloomerang for its donor retention metrics and CRM capabilities, but you want:
More powerful fundraising tools, particularly for monthly giving programs
The freedom to bring your own payment processor and negotiate better rates
More customizable donation forms and campaign pages
A platform purpose-built around recurring giving strategy
The integration is smoother than with Blackbaud (thanks to Zapier), but you’re still managing two systems. For some organizations, that trade-off makes sense—especially if Bloomerang’s CRM features are serving you well, but their fundraising tools or payment processing limitations are holding you back.
Should you use Blackbaud or Bloomerang if you’re a small nonprofit?
Probably not—at least not as your first platform choice.
Here’s why: Both Blackbaud and Bloomerang are built with larger nonprofits in mind. Their pricing reflects this (thousands to tens of thousands annually), their feature sets assume you have dedicated staff to manage them, and their complexity is designed for organizations with multiple departments and sophisticated workflows.
If you’re a small nonprofit just getting started or working with a lean team, you’ll likely find yourself paying for enterprise-level features you don’t need while spending valuable time learning systems that are more complex than your operations require.
What small nonprofits actually need:
Essential donor management—contact tracking, donation history, basic segmentation, and communication tools. Not dozens of modules, advanced reporting dashboards, or features built for 100-person development teams.
That’s exactly what 4aGoodCause delivers: The core CRM functionality you’ll actually use, combined with best-in-class fundraising tools purpose-built for monthly giving, like our Monthly Giving Toolkit. It’s not about having less—it’s about having what matters, without paying for (or learning) what doesn’t.

Blackbaud vs. Bloomerang vs. 4aGoodCause: What makes sense for you?
I’ve been supporting nonprofits for over 25 years, and truly, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Based on my experience, each of these platforms is capable of serving different types of organizations well.
Blackbaud targets large organizations with enterprise needs, enterprise budgets, and the staff to manage that level of complexity.
Bloomerang positions itself as the modern alternative, but their pricing structure (which increases with your database size) still reflects a focus on larger, more established nonprofits.
4aGoodCause is designed specifically for small to midsize organizations—offering fundraising sophistication with transparent, predictable pricing and the flexibility to bring your own payment processor.
Here’s when Blackbaud might be the right choice:
You’re a large, established organization (think national/international nonprofits, major universities, large healthcare systems)
You need a comprehensive ecosystem that handles not just fundraising, but also accounting, grant making, tuition management, and multiple other departments
You have dedicated IT staff and database administrators
You have budget for tens of thousands of dollars in annual software costs
You value having everything in one vendor ecosystem (even if each piece isn’t best-in-class)
Here’s when Bloomerang might be the right choice:
You’re a mid to large nonprofit looking for modern donor management
You want an intuitive data management system that doesn’t require extensive onboarding
You value donor retention metrics and engagement tracking
You need solid CRM features plus online fundraising in one platform
You’re willing to pay premium pricing for ease of use
You don’t need to bring your own payment processor
When 4aGoodCause might be the right choice
You’re a small to mid-size nonprofit focused on growing monthly giving alongside traditional fundraising strategies (which 4aGC also supports!)
You want predictable, transparent pricing without per-contact fees
You want the freedom to bring your own payment processor and own your donor tokens
You value personal support and want to avoid enterprise-level complexity
You want online donation pages that have high-conversion practices built right in (4aGoodCause donation pages convert at 27% on average)
