Choosing the right fundraising software can feel like a high-stakes decision—especially when you’re weighing platforms that serve very different needs.
If you’re comparing OneCause and Give Lively, you’re likely exploring two ends of the fundraising software spectrum: one built for large-scale events and auctions, the other designed as a free, no-frills platform for small nonprofits just getting started.

What is OneCause?
OneCause has earned its reputation in the event fundraising space, particularly for organizations running high-production galas and auctions.
OneCause was recently acquired by Bonterra, a major player in the nonprofit technology space providing software, AI tools, and coaching for nonprofit organizations, foundations, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) teams. The acquisition of OneCause made strategic sense—Bonterra wanted to strengthen its position in the events and auction fundraising niche, which is where OneCause has built its reputation and expertise.
This consolidation trend in nonprofit technology means OneCause now operates under a larger corporate umbrella, which could influence future product development, pricing, and integration capabilities with other Bonterra-owned platforms.
What OneCause does well
Here’s where it shines:
Event management powerhouse: If your nonprofit’s biggest revenue driver is an annual gala or auction, OneCause delivers industry-leading tools for event registration, mobile bidding, item management, paddle raises, and seating arrangements. They can even send staff to your event to help with check-in, bidding management, and on-site technical support.
Comprehensive auction features: From silent auctions to live bidding to mobile bidding that works seamlessly with in-person events, OneCause handles complex auction scenarios that would overwhelm simpler platforms. They even have customizable leaderboards that feature top donors, team fundraising progress, and donation thermometers to drive donor engagement.
AI-powered automation: OneCause uses AI tools to automate auction item descriptions, personalize bidding recommendations for each guest based on their browsing behavior, and streamline event planning tasks—helping organizations save time and increase auction revenue.
Real-time engagement through automated alerts: OneCause sends automated text and email notifications to keep participants engaged—alerting bidders when they’ve been outbid, sharing event updates, and highlighting donation opportunities without requiring a separate app.
Peer-to-peer campaign capabilities: While primarily event-focused, OneCause offers peer-to-peer fundraising tools that can support walk-a-thons and similar events.
Customer support for events: Users like OneCause’s responsive customer service team, especially the support available before and during events when you need it most.
OneCause limitations
Expensive investment: OneCause operates on custom pricing with different modules for auctions, peer-to-peer, fundraising, and text-to-give. For many small to mid-size nonprofits, the cost can reach several thousand dollars annually (and that’s before you factor in payment processing fees).
Steep learning curve: Multiple user reviews mention that OneCause’s interface can be confusing and requires significant time to learn, especially for teams without dedicated event tech staff.
Poor online donation forms: Based on my research and user feedback, OneCause’s donation pages are not optimized for conversion. They use multi-step processes that can frustrate donors and reduce completion rates.
Limited CRM and donor management: OneCause isn’t built to be your donor database. If you need access to robust donor data, reporting dashboards, or relationship management beyond event attendees, you’ll need another system. (Comparing donor CRM options? Check out our in-depth guide on two popular nonprofit CRMs: Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge vs. Bloomerang vs 4aGoodCause.)
Payment Processing: Payments run through the platform’s integrated payments system or use Stripe or Deluxe. This means it’s likely your payment data/merchant of record lives inside the OneCause ecosystem rather than in a separate merchant account you control.
Integration challenges: Several users report difficulty integrating OneCause with their existing donor management software, requiring manual workarounds to keep data in sync.
No monthly giving focus: OneCause is designed to maximize event revenue, not build long-term recurring support. If monthly giving is part of your strategy, you’ll need additional tools.
Give Lively stands out as one of the only fundraising platforms that is truly free to nonprofits in terms of out-of-pocket costs. It was created by tech entrepreneurs and philanthropists who wanted to provide professional fundraising software without charging subscription or platform fees.
Here’s the key to understanding its model: Donors may see two optional add-ons at checkout:
A platform tip (usually preset around 9%) that supports Give Lively’s operations and is not tax-deductible, and
A checkbox to cover payment processing fees, which benefits the nonprofit and is typically tax-deductible as part of the gift.
While this may look similar to tip-funded tools like Zeffy and Givebutter, the difference is that Give Lively doesn’t rely on those tips to function. (You can read our in-depth guide on Givebutter vs. Zeffy here.)
Nonprofits never pay subscription or platform fees—only standard processing costs (which donors can optionally cover)—making it about as close to “truly free” as fundraising software gets.
GiveLively offers basic online fundraising tools including donation forms, event ticketing, peer-to-peer campaigns, and a “live display” feature that shows donations in real-time at events. It’s designed for simplicity and accessibility, making it particularly appealing to brand-new nonprofits or organizations with no budget for software.
What Give Lively does well
Give Lively stands out as the only fundraising platform that’s truly free for nonprofits—no subscription fees, no platform fees, and they even cover standard payment processing fees through donor tips.
Genuinely free: Unlike nonprofit fundraising platforms that claim to be “free” while taking substantial percentages through donor tips, Give Lively operates on a philanthropist-funded model. The founders cover operational costs, so nonprofits never pay out-of-pocket for the software.
Simple to get started: For brand-new nonprofits, Give Lively offers a straightforward way to accept online giving without a financial commitment.
Event ticketing and live display: Give Lively includes basic event ticketing and a “live display” feature that shows donations in real-time at events—a nice touch for engagement.
Payment processing via Stripe: Payments run through your own Stripe account, which means you own your data and receive funds directly. You’re not locked into Give Lively, but you are required to use Stripe while on the platform.
Give Lively limitations
Limited features: Give Lively is designed to be basic. You won’t find advanced segmentation, customizable tax receipts, robust reporting, or sophisticated donor management tools.
No monthly giving toolkit: While you can set up recurring donations as an option on forms, GiveLively doesn’t provide the strategic tools, templates, or guidance to build and grow a monthly giving program.
Basic donation pages: The donation experience isn’t optimized for conversion. Forms appear as pop-up widgets that can feel more like a for-profit checkout than a nonprofit giving experience.
Customer service concerns: While Give Lively touts community drop-ins and resources, some user reviews mention difficulty getting timely support when issues arise.
Donor tips go to the platform: This is the trade-off for “free.” Donors are asked to add a tip to cover Give Lively’s costs, and that tip doesn’t go to your nonprofit—it goes to Give Lively. While the percentages may be lower than other “free” platforms, it’s still donor generosity that could have supported your mission.
Not built for growth: If your nonprofit is raising more than $1,000 monthly or has plans to scale, Give Lively’s limited feature set becomes a significant constraint.

Alternative option: 4aGoodCause (4aGC)
At 4aGoodCause, we built our platform with a different priority in mind: helping small to mid-size nonprofits build sustainable revenue through monthly giving, without the complexity or cost of enterprise software.
Here’s what makes 4aGC different:
Transparent, predictable pricing: $99/month for your first year (paid annually), then scaling based on your fundraising volume. No surprises, no custom quotes, no hidden fees.
Donor tips go to YOU: When you enable optional donor tips on your 4aGC forms, 100% of those tips go to your nonprofit—not to us. We cap tips at 4% to keep them modest and prioritize the donor experience.
Monthly Giving Toolkit: Unlike platforms that treat recurring donations as an afterthought, 4aGC gives you the strategy, templates, and tools to start and grow a successful monthly giving program alongside your traditional fundraising strategies, like events, P2P fundraising, and capital campaigns..
High-converting donation pages: Our forms are designed specifically for nonprofit giving, with clean, user-friendly layouts, mobile optimization, and strategic elements that increase completion rates. 4aGoodCause donation pages average 27% conversion (over 2x the industry average).
Simple CRM included: Track donor history, segment your supporters, view giving patterns, and manage relationships—all in one place, without needing separate software.
No payment processor lock-in: Bring your own payment processor or we’ll help you find one that’s a good fit. You have control of your merchant account and data.
Personal support: You’re not navigating this alone. Our team provides free onboarding, strategy guidance, and ongoing support to help you reach your fundraising goals—white-glove service that we’re proud to offer.
Event-friendly (without the cost): Many of our clients run successful galas and events using 4aGC. You can sell sponsorships and tickets, use our mobile-friendly pages for on-site donations and paddle raises, and encourage monthly giving sign-ups at events… or later run a monthly giving conversion campaign to attendees. All without paying thousands for event-specific software.

I really like how easy and intuitive 4aGoodCause is to use for both our team and our donors. It's user-friendly and everything is well organized, making managing donations and events simple and efficient. The support is outstanding, with Ronald always being responsive and incredibly helpful.

The real cost: OneCause vs. Give Lively vs. 4aGoodCause
Understanding the actual cost of fundraising software requires looking beyond the sticker price. Let’s break down what you’ll really pay with each platform.
OneCause pricing explained
OneCause doesn’t publish clear pricing on their website—you’ll need to request a custom quote. Based on user reports and industry research, here’s what you can expect:
Modular pricing structure: OneCause charges separately for different features:
Event/Auction module
Peer-to-peer module
Online fundraising module
Text-to-give module
Starting packages: OneCause advertises a pay-as-you-go structure as their entry level option— “start for as little as $500 down” according to their website. Costs escalate quickly when you add features like advanced reporting, integrations, or multiple modules (all of which require a custom quote).
On-site support: If you want OneCause staff at your event (which many organizations value), expect additional fees on top of your software costs.
Payment processing: OneCause uses OneCause Payments (likely Stripe-based) or direct Stripe integration. You’ll pay standard credit card processing fees (typically 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction).
Hidden costs: The learning curve means you may need to invest staff time in training or hire dedicated event tech support for complex implementations.
For a nonprofit raising $50,000+ annually through events, OneCause could cost several thousand dollars per year in software fees alone, before processing costs.
The catch: Donors are asked to add a voluntary tip, which is presented as a sliding scale (typically preset at 9%) which can be adjusted up or down by the donor.
Who keeps the tips: Give Lively keeps all donor tips to fund their operations—these tips do not go to your nonprofit.
Payment processing: You’ll still pay standard processing fees (2.9% + $0.30 per transaction with Stripe, for example). Donors can check a box to cover these costs as an additional tax-deductible gift during checkout.
What this means in practice: For a $100 donation, you might see:
$2.90 + $0.30 = $3.20 in Stripe fees (your nonprofit pays this if the donor does not)
$9.00 in donor tip (goes to Give Lively, not your nonprofit)
Net to your nonprofit: $96.80
So while there’s no out-of-pocket cost to your organization, donor generosity (aka, donor tips) that could have supported your mission is going elsewhere.
In addition, if you get your Stripe account through Give Lively, then you would be paying 2.9% for payment processing, not the discounted rate normally available to nonprofits if you connected your existing Stripe account. (They pocket that difference.)
Give Lively also becomes the merchant of record for your organization, which comes with confusion (like their name on the credit card statement) and possible data lock-in.
Unlimited conversion-focused donation pages and campaigns

Free onboarding and ongoing support
Payment processing:
With 4aGC, you can either:
Use 4aGC’s built-in payment processing, or
Bring your own payment processor (Stripe, Authorize.net, etc.) and pay those fees directly
Donor tips: When enabled, donors see a modest 4% tip option (capped to stay donor-friendly, and you can turn it off). 100% of donor tips go to your nonprofit—not to 4aGC.
No transaction fees from 4aGC: We don’t take a percentage of your donations. Your software cost is predictable, and donor generosity stays with your mission.

What real users are saying: OneCause vs. Give Lively vs. 4aGoodCause
User feedback gives us some real insight into how these platforms perform. Here’s what actual users report.
Organizations running auctions appreciate the mobile bidding functionality, item management tools, and the option to have OneCause staff on-site during events.
In her Capterra review, Meg D., a director of a nonprofit foundation, speaks positively about the platform features, noting that the one drawback is cost, a consistent theme across reviews.
Capterra review, Meg D.
Another user, Ashley E., gives the OneCause platform 4 stars, but says her team is looking to switch to a different option in 2026, due to the lack of integration capabilities. She says, “We wanted something that integrated with our donor management software which, unfortunately, OneCause does not at this time.
Affordability is the clear highlight in reviews, since the platform is free for nonprofits to use (with the exception of the Stripe processing fee for transactions). Jon B., a Director of Development, says he recommends Give Lively for “smaller nonprofits needing a quick fix.” That said, he does mention that while it’s mostly easy to use, running reports was difficult and the lack of integrations can be frustrating.
Capterra review, Jon B.
Reviews are mixed around the features offered. Some reviewers describe the platform as “limited” in terms of functionality. Other reviewers talk about pairing Give Lively’s fundraising features with a deeper CRM like Salesforce. Christopher L. in his G2 review says using this hybrid approach has been a game changer: “It’s truly energizing to see it all coming together.”
Reviewers consistently highlight 4aGoodCause for its hands-on support and partnership-style approach. Users also praise the strong monthly giving tools, flexible customization options, and ability to manage online donations, peer-to-peer fundraising, and donor data in one place.
“
4aGoodCause has been an exceptional partner in strengthening our fundraising strategy. From implementation to ongoing support, their team demonstrated professionalism, expertise, and a genuine investment in our success. Their platform is intuitive, reliable, and thoughtfully designed to support nonprofit growth. What truly sets them apart is their responsiveness and personalized guidance — they take the time to understand your goals and provide solutions that make a measurable difference. We highly recommend 4aGoodCause to any organization looking to elevate its fundraising efforts with a trusted and capable partner.

For small nonprofits that need robust fundraising pages paired with built-in CRM capabilities, 4aGoodCause is a strong fit.
Reviewers also highlight the platform’s transparent pricing, noting that clear costs and predictable fees make it easier to plan budgets with confidence. “The subscription has more than paid for itself,” Jonathan Klein says in his review of 4aGoodCause:
“
Great company that helps get real results! 4aGoodCause is an excellent resource for non-profits who wish to maximize their fundraising campaign efforts and minimize the technical work of website landing pages, online payment systems, and donor record keeping. Our campaign for a new community concert piano has gone so much better than imagined thanks to the resources available to us as a 4aGC subscriber. Ronald and his team are VERY responsive when it comes to tech support questions and have been great fundraising consultants to us at each stage of our campaign. The subscription has more than paid for itself and I will be recommending 4aGC to all my colleagues in the not-for-profit sector.

OneCause vs. Give Lively vs. 4aGoodCause: Which is right for you?
There’s no one-size-fits-all fundraising solution. The right choice depends on your organization’s size, fundraising strategy, and long-term goals.
Choose 4aGoodCause if:
You want to build or grow a monthly giving program alongside traditional strategies (like events and P2P) and need sustainable, predictable fundraising.
You’re raising $5000 or more monthly and need an all-in-one platform with CRM, donor management, and strong donation pages. 4aGC provides robust features at a fraction of the cost and complexity. (it’s really easy to use, and we made it that way on purpose!) You get transparent pricing, keep donor tips, and have access to personal, human support—without juggling multiple tools.
You run events like galas, golf tournaments, or fundraising dinners but don’t need full auction management. Many 4aGC clients run successful events selling sponsorships and tickets, using our mobile-friendly pages for on-site donations and monthly giving sign-ups. You save thousands compared to event-specific platforms.
You need to integrate with your existing CRM or donor database or other fundraising tools in your tech stack. Our Zapier integration makes connecting to thousands of tools seamless.
⭐️ Not sure what you need? We’re happy to take a look at your current setup and give you an honest opinion, even if that means pointing you somewhere else. Book a demo here.)
Choose OneCause if:
You run a large annual gala or auction that’s your primary revenue driver, and you have the budget to invest in premium event software. OneCause excels at complex event management, mobile bidding, and on-site support for high-production fundraisers. If your gala brings in significant revenue and you need sophisticated auction tools, the investment may be worth it.
Choose Give Lively if:
You’re a brand-new nonprofit (less than a year old) raising under $1,000 per month with no budget for software. When you’re just starting out and testing if online fundraising efforts will work for your cause, Give Lively’s zero out-of-pocket cost makes sense. Just understand the limitations and plan to upgrade as you grow.
A few additional considerations:
If your one big fundraiser is an auction: You might use OneCause for that specific event while using 4aGoodCause for ongoing donor relationships, monthly giving, and smaller events throughout the year. We’ve worked with nonprofits who have chosen this hybrid approach, and it works really well.
If you’re a startup nonprofit: Give Lively can be a reasonable place to start while you’re figuring out your fundraising model. In 6-12 months, you can migrate to a more robust platform, like 4aGoodCause, to leverage tools that support your nonprofit’s growth.
If stable, recurring income is your goal: Neither OneCause nor Give Lively prioritizes recurring donations the way 4aGC does. Monthly giving drives long-term sustainability, and the right support makes all the difference.
Ready to choose the right platform for your nonprofit?
After 25 years working in nonprofit software, I can say with confidence that there’s no one-size-fits-all option. The right choice for you depends on what you’re looking to accomplish. Here’s the bottom line:
OneCause is a powerful choice if you’re running large-scale galas and auctions with complex needs and have the budget to invest in premium event software.
Give Lively can work for brand-new or very small nonprofits raising under $1,000/month who need a no-cost starting point—but understand you’ll probably outgrow it quickly.
4aGoodCause is purpose-built for small to mid-size nonprofits that want sustainable, predictable fundraising through monthly giving, without the complexity or cost of enterprise platforms.
We support any platform that helps nonprofits succeed. OneCause and Give Lively both serve important niches in the fundraising tech ecosystem.
But if you want:
Transparent pricing you can plan around
Donation pages that average 27% conversion (over 2x the industry average)
Donor tips that go to your nonprofit, not software companies
Tools designed specifically for monthly giving success
Real people supporting you every step of the way
…we’d love to show you what 4aGoodCause can do for your mission.
