Givebutter vs. Little Green Light: Which Should You Choose?
You’re doing your homework, and that’s a good thing. Choosing the right fundraising software is one of the most impactful decisions a small nonprofit can make. And when you start looking at comparing platforms like Givebutter and Little Green Light, things can get confusing.
Here’s why: These two platforms aren’t really the same kind of software.
Givebutter is built around online fundraising campaigns. Little Green Light is built around managing your donor database. Knowing that difference—before you sign up for anything—can save you a lot of frustration down the road.

While we do share how 4aGoodCause stacks up (yes, that’s our nonprofit fundraising platform), this guide aims to help you make the best, most informed decision for your mission. I’ve spent more than 25 years helping nonprofits build online fundraising programs, and I’ve worked closely with a wide range of tools—including clients who’ve come to us from both Givebutter and Little Green Light. I’ll do my best to give you a genuinely useful picture of all three.

Givebutter vs. Little Green Light: What are they designed to do?
Here’s the thing about comparing Givebutter to Little Green Light: it’s not an apples to apples comparison. These platforms were built to solve different problems, and that’s the most important thing to understand when choosing between them.
Let me explain:
Givebutter is a fundraising platform, packed with extensive fundraising features. Its core purpose is helping your organization run campaigns online: donation pages, peer-to-peer fundraising, event management, recurring gifts… the works. It also has a CRM layer (called Givebutter Plus), but fundraising is the heart of what it does.
Little Green Light, on the other hand, is a donor CRM. Its core strength is helping you manage your donor relationships: tracking contacts, recording gift history, basic email marketing, running reports, and keeping all of your donor information organized. Its online donation capability (through something called LGL Forms) exists, but it’s minimal and was never really designed to compete with a full fundraising platform.
Givebutter is built to raise money. Little Green Light is built to track it. Both matter. But they’re good at different things, and knowing which gap you actually need to fill is the key to choosing well.
Here’s what you need to know about the pros and cons of each platform:
What Givebutter does well
Givebutter has invested heavily in features, and it shows. If your nonprofit needs a wide range of online fundraising tools in one place, it’s a solid option:
Customizable fundraising pages with support for recurring and one-time donations
Peer-to-peer campaigns, crowdfunding, and event ticketing
Embedded donation forms (though embedded forms can add distraction if your page has a lot of competing links), as well as standalone donation pages
A broad library of integrations and solid educational resources like webinars, a blog, and lots of content to help you reach your fundraising goals
Support for popular payment methods like Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, and Venmo.
What to watch with Givebutter
Givebutter is trying to be everything to everybody, and that ambition (while admirable at times) has a few trade-offs:
Their pricing model relies on donor tips, which has caused real frustration for donors and nonprofits alike and can often have a higher effective cost. (More on this below.)
You’re locked into Stripe as your primary payment processor, with no option to bring your own merchant account or negotiate rates.
Accessing CRM features (workflows, custom reports, data hygiene tools, and contact management at scale), including advanced automation, requires upgrading to Givebutter Plus, which is priced by contacts—on top of donor tips—and can get significantly more expensive than standalone nonprofit CRM options.
Their donor portal doesn’t log donors into your organization’s branded experience, which can be disorienting for a donor.

Working with 4aGC has been great! I would highly recommend. Our online monthly donations have gone up 300% since we started working with them. They listen to feedback and ideas and even implement them. Tech support has been breezy and prompt. It's the personal touch that sets them apart from the rest.

What Little Green Light does well
Little Green Light has earned a strong reputation as one of the most affordable and accessible donor CRMs for small nonprofits. If you’re looking for a place to centralize and simplify your donor data, it delivers:
Solid donor management tools: contact records, gift tracking, acknowledgment letters, direct mail generation, and basic email marketing
Volunteer tracking and major gift management
Pricing based on the number of constituent records, with no long-term contracts. Up to 20,000 contacts for under $100/month makes it one of the more budget-friendly CRM options available
Good integration support, including Zapier, webhooks, and its own API, so it can connect to a lot of other tools in your stack
No platform transaction fees on their donation forms
💡 Did you know?Little Green Light works great alongside 4aGoodCause’s robust fundraising platform features. In fact, we have a Zapier integration to help them partner side-by-side. So if you’re already using them for your donor management platform, you’re in luck. Check out all 4aGC’s integrations or book a demo to learn how they work together.
What to watch with Little Green Light
Little Green Light was built to manage donor relationships, not to run your online fundraising. That gap is real:
LGL Forms (their donation form tool) is basic and, by most accounts, not easy to use. It functions more like a form builder than a purpose-built fundraising page, and it breaks several of the best practices that lead to higher conversion rates.
There’s no real monthly giving toolkit. Recurring giving is essentially a single field on a form, not a program-building feature set.
Payment options are limited. LGL runs on Stripe, and while Apple Pay and Google Pay are theoretically possible, enabling them requires your team to configure Stripe settings directly—something most small nonprofits aren’t equipped to do.
Educational content is minimal. There’s a blog, but not much ongoing learning support compared to what larger platforms offer.
Some users find the interface has a learning curve, especially for staff who aren’t experienced with CRM systems.
⭐️ What if there’s an easier way to maximize donations? There is. It’s called recurring monthly giving, and it generates 2.4X more revenue on average than one-time gifts. And our Monthly Giving Toolkit simplifies the whole program. Learn more.

How do Givebutter and Little Green Light compare on pricing?
Pricing in this space can be deceptively complex. Here’s a plain-English breakdown of how each platform charges.
Givebutter pricing
Givebutter markets itself as free, and for basic usage without CRM features, there are no upfront platform fees. But the platform covers its costs through donor tips: an optional (but prominently suggested) additional contribution that donors add at checkout, often ranging from 15–22% of the donation amount.
The problem? Givebutter keeps those tips.
Those tips come out of a donor’s generosity budget. And with Givebutter, that generosity goes to their platform, not your cause.
If you want to disable tips, you’ll pay a percentage of transactions (1–5% depending on donation type) plus payment processing fees. And if you want to use Givebutter’s CRM features like contact management, workflows, custom reports, you’ll need Givebutter Plus, which is priced by the number of contacts. That can add up to significantly more than a standalone CRM like Little Green Light.

Little Green Light pricing
Little Green Light has pretty straightforward pricing: You pay based on how many donor records you store, with no hidden fees and no platform transaction fee on donations. Plans start at $45/month for up to 2,500 contacts and scale up from there.
For a small nonprofit, this is genuinely affordable, especially compared to larger CRM platforms like Bloomerang, DonorPerfect, or Neon CRM. But remember, you’re paying for data management. You’ll likely still need something else for your donation pages.
4aGoodCause pricing
4aGoodCause uses a flat monthly fee model—starting at $99/month for new clients in the first year—with all features included and no platform transaction fees. You’re not locked in; there’s no long-term contract required. (Get more details on our pricing here.)
In addition to our tailored customer service, we’re really proud of our pricing structure; it was designed with the best interest of small to midsize nonprofits in mind.
One meaningful differentiator: When donors leave optional tips on 4aGoodCause pages, 100% of those tips go directly to your nonprofit. Not to us.
That’s the opposite of how tip-based platforms work, and for organizations with active monthly giving programs, it adds up. You can also choose to disable the optional donor tips functionality if you want.
We also give you flexibility on payment processing. Unlike platforms that lock you into Stripe, 4aGoodCause can work with your existing merchant account or help you find a processing setup that fits your organization—including support for Authorize.net and other options that give you more control over what works best for your nonprofit.

Givebutter reviews
Givebutter scores well overall—around 4.7 out of 5 on G2 and 4.8 on Capterra. Most reviewers appreciate the user-friendly interface and the visual polish of the platform.
But the donor tip experience continues to surface as a recurring pain point, as mentioned in Missy S.’s G2 review below:

A third option to consider: 4aGoodCause
My team built 4aGoodCause specifically for small to mid-size nonprofits that need a fundraising platform (not just a donation form) without the complexity or cost of enterprise software.
Here’s how we’re different from both Givebutter and Little Green Light:
Fundraising-first: We’re built around helping you run successful campaigns and grow a monthly giving program. While some platforms tuck a recurring option somewhere on their donation form and call it done, we built an entire toolkit around monthly giving—because after 25 years in nonprofit fundraising, we understand that having a monthly giving program is one of the highest-impact things a small organization can invest in.
Donor tips go to you: When donors tip on our platform, 100% of that money goes to your nonprofit. Always.
All you need in a donor CRM: For some small nonprofits, our lighter, simplified donor CRM is all you need to manage all your donor data, making us an excellent all-in-one solution that’s hassle-free and great on price. For others who need more complex donor management, our fundraising suite syncs with your favorite CRM with Zapier connections (like Little Green Light!). Check it out for yourself in a demo.
Easy-to-create, unlimited fundraising pages: Build unlimited pages and campaigns with unique messaging for different times of the year and different audiences. No tech or design experience needed.
Flat, predictable pricing: One monthly fee, all features included—including unlimited contacts and users. Your org will never be charged for increasing your contacts or people on your team who need access to the platform.
Payment processor flexibility: You can work with the processor you already have, or we’ll help you find the best option for your situation. We also offer payment processing if you don’t have a preferred processor.
Unlimited landing pages: Easily build landing pages for specific campaigns, storytelling, or to promote events—with designs based on proven best practices.
Branded donor portal: Your donors never feel like they’ve left your organization. They log in to your branded experience, which reinforces the relationship they have with your cause — not with your software.
You keep your data: If you ever need to change software, your donor data—including recurring giving donor payment information—goes with you, securely.
Personal support: You get access to real people who understand nonprofit fundraising and want to help.

If you have large, complex donor data needs (major gift tracking, advanced segmentation, volunteer management at a large scale) a dedicated CRM like Little Green Light may be a better fit for that layer of your work.
In fact, we have clients who use both.
They run their fundraising campaigns and recurring giving programs through 4aGoodCause, and sync data back to Little Green Light via our Zapier integration to keep their donor database up to date. It’s a great option for a lot of nonprofit organizations.

Great company that helps get real results! 4aGoodCause is an excellent resource for non-profits who wish to maximize their fundraising campaign efforts and minimize the technical work of website landing pages, online payment systems, and donor record keeping.

Donor data & CRM management
All in one fundraising, built for monthly giving
Givebutter might be a good fit if…
You run a variety of campaign types—fundraising events, peer-to-peer, and standard online fundraising, including options for in-person events—and want them all in one place.
You’re comfortable with a tip-based pricing model, which can often have a higher effective cost or spike donor confusion, but your donor base has low sensitivity to the tip prompt
You need a wide range of integrations and an active resource library
You’re not yet using a CRM heavily and don’t anticipate needing deep contact management tools
Little Green Light might be a good fit if…
Your primary challenge is managing donor data, not running online campaigns
You already have a donation solution you’re happy with (like 4aGoodCause) and just need a CRM to connect to it
You need to track major gifts, volunteers, and complex contact histories at scale in a structured system
You’re working with a tight budget and need an affordable CRM entry point
4aGoodCause might be your best fit if…
You understand the long-term benefits of starting or growing a monthly giving program, and you want a platform that can support that fully in addition to traditional fundraising strategies
Pricing transparency matters to you, and you don’t want to worry about donor tip confusion
You want donor tips to benefit your organization, not your software vendor
You’re a small to mid-size nonprofit that wants personal customer support and a team that understands fundraising strategy
You want the flexibility to choose (or keep) your own payment processor
You need an easy-to-use solution for beautiful, branded fundraising and donation pages because you have a “non-techy” team.

Choose a platform that empowers you to raise more and stress less
When you’re comparing Givebutter vs. Little Green Light, the most important thing to know is that they’re solving different problems. They are both solid platforms with real strengths; the challenge isn’t that either one is lacking, it’s that they’re built for different jobs. Getting clear on your own priorities is what makes the difference.
At the end of the day, the best platform is the one that solves the problem you’re facing. And one that doesn’t add any complexity or friction for your already-hardworking team.
If that’s donor data management, Little Green Light is worth a serious look. If it’s running more campaigns and raising more online, Givebutter has a lot of great features to offer.
And if it’s building a sustainable monthly giving program with transparent pricing and personal support—one that can also support you in classic fundraising efforts like event ticketing, P2P fundraising, capital campaigns, and much more!—well, that’s exactly what we built 4aGoodCause for.
