Givebutter vs. DonorPerfect: An Honest Comparison (Plus a Third Option Worth Knowing About)
If you’ve been comparing fundraising platforms, Givebutter and DonorPerfect have probably both shown up in your research. They’re widely recognized, they’re both built for nonprofit organizations, and on the surface, they seem like they might be solving the same problem.
But here’s what’s easy to miss: These two platforms are actually built around completely different priorities.
Here’s the clearest way I can frame it: Givebutter is fundraising-first. DonorPerfect is CRM-first. Understanding that distinction before you start a trial or sit through a demo will save you a lot of time and frustration.
✋Important note: There are no affiliate links in this article. We weren’t paid to review these platforms. I’ve spent more than 25 years helping nonprofits build online fundraising programs, and I’ve had a firsthand look at what each of these platforms does well and where they fall short. I’ll share that experience as honestly as I can. While we do share how 4aGoodCause stacks up (yes, that’s our platform), this guide aims to help you make the best, most informed decision for your mission.

Givebutter vs. DonorPerfect: What do these platforms actually do?
The short answer: Both are web-based platforms built for nonprofits, but they’re solving different core problems and have different key features.
Givebutter is a fundraising platform that’s trying to be everything to everybody. It’s built around getting donations in the door through online campaigns, in-person fundraising events, auctions, event ticketing, peer-to-peer pages, and more. It’s feature-rich, well-designed, and free to start (with a model we’ll dig into in the pricing section). If your goal is to streamline your fundraising efforts, Givebutter can be a good solution.
DonorPerfect is a donor CRM that’s been around since 1981, making it one of the more established platforms in the space. If your goal is to track, segment, and communicate with your donors over time, DonorPerfect is built for that.
So before you compare them side by side on a spreadsheet, the more useful questions are probably:
What does your organization actually need most right now?
4aGoodCause has been an exceptional partner in strengthening our fundraising strategy. From implementation to ongoing support, their team demonstrated professionalism, expertise, and a genuine investment in our success. Their platform is intuitive, reliable, and thoughtfully designed to support nonprofit growth.

What is Givebutter like?
The Givebutter platform is easy to get started with, the design is clean and modern, and there’s a lot of functionality packed in—especially for organizations that run events, auctions, or peer-to-peer campaigns. The ease of use is real—similar to 4aGoodCause—and for organizations that need to move fast, that matters.
What Givebutter does well:
Fundraising pages that look good, support online giving, and can be set up quickly without a deep technical knowledge base
A wide range of campaign types—galas, auctions, crowdfunding, and peer-to-peer fundraising—all in one place
Extensive integrations, including a Zapier connection, so they play well with other tools in your tech stack
Strong educational content—webinars, blog posts, and resources that help clients get better at fundraising, not just at using the software
What to think carefully about with Givebutter:
The donor tip model. When a donor completes a transaction, they’re prompted to leave a tip for Givebutter which is pre-set at 15% by default. The platform isn’t actually free; it’s funded by your donors, without them always realizing it. That’s a real tradeoff when donor trust is hard to earn and easy to lose.
Payment processing is locked to Stripe (under an account owned by Givebutter). You can’t bring your own merchant account, negotiate your own rates, or take advantage of a payment processing relationship you’ve already built. You can’t leave with the Stripe account when you quit the platform, jeopradizing your recurring givers.
CRM features cost extra. Givebutter markets itself as an all-in-one platform, but donor data tracking and ongoing donor relations require a separate paid tier called Givebutter Plus, which is priced per contact. As your database grows, costs can increase significantly compared to other CRM software solutions.
DonorPerfect is, in my view, one of the more capable donor CRMs available for nonprofits that need serious database functionality. That’s a genuine compliment. If managing, segmenting, and communicating with a complex donor database is the core goal you have for your fundraising software, DonorPerfect is designed with that in mind.
What DonorPerfect does well:
Deep donor records. DonorPerfect lets you track giving history, household relationships, business connections, custom data fields, major gift pipelines, volunteer activity, and more.
Direct mail support. With robust list management and segmentation tools, this is a definite advantage if your fundraising relies on a direct mail program.
Tight Constant Contact integration. DonorPerfect lets you streamline donor communications by running email marketing with Constant Contact integration.
Comprehensive reporting and analytics, plus a customer support team that earns consistently high marks.
What to think carefully about with DonorPerfect:
The fundraising tools are weak. Their online donation forms aren’t built with conversion best practices in mind, aren’t optimized for growing a monthly giving program, and offer limited customization. In my experience, the donation forms are the main frustration for clients thinking about making a change.
No Zapier integration. This is a significant constraint that’s easy to overlook. Unless a platform has built a specific native integration with DonorPerfect, the two systems can’t communicate.
Pricing isn’t public. You’ll need to request a custom quote, and access to a live support representative is only available on the highest tier. If phone support matters to your team, that’s worth knowing before you commit.
Most small to midsize nonprofits don’t need a complex CRM. DonorPerfect offers an excellent, complex CRM, but I’ve found that most nonprofits can do everything they need to for their donors in a more simplified (and affordable) manner.
If Givebutter is built for organizations that want modern fundraising pages and tools, and DonorPerfect is built for organizations that need robust donor engagement tools, 4aGoodCause (that’s us!) is built for something that sits between and beyond both—designed specifically with small to mid-size nonprofits in mind.
4aGoodCause is a fundraising platform and light CRM built to help you run all your online fundraising campaigns and fundraising events, as well as grow a sustainable monthly giving program. Here’s what that looks like in practice:
Optimized donation pages built from the ground up around conversion best practices
A full campaign toolkit—event registration, peer-to-peer fundraising, text-to-donate, crowdfunding, and more fundraising marketing tools
A complete Monthly Giving Toolkit, including donor upgrade prompts, automated retention alerts, and an account updater for credit card renewals
A branded donor portal where supporters can self-manage their recurring gifts—under your nonprofit’s name, not ours
Flat monthly pricing with no platform transaction fees and no per-contact charges
Payment processing flexibility, meaning you can bring your own payment processor, connect with Authorize.net, use Stripe, or we’ll help you find the right setup.
Donor tips go to you, not to your platform. You can also choose to disable the donor tip functionality without any additional costs or processing fees.
Most platforms treat recurring donations as a single toggle on a form. We built an entire toolkit around it because monthly giving is where sustainable nonprofit growth actually happens.

What do Givebutter, DonorPerfect, and 4aGoodCause cost?
Pricing in this space is rarely as simple as a number on a page. Here’s a plain-English breakdown.
Givebutter pricing
Givebutter’s base platform is “free” in theory—funded by the optional donor tips that are pre-set at 15% at checkout. There’s no monthly subscription platform fee at the base level, which makes it easy to get started, but it’s worth being honest with yourself about who’s actually paying for the software.
Those tips come out of a donor’s generosity budget. And with Givebutter, that generosity goes to support their platform, not your cause.
If you choose to turn off the donor tipping functionality, a 3% processing fee applies to each donation, as well as standard payment processing fees (2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction).
We’ve done a deep dive into the real costs of “free” fundraising platforms like Givebutter, and you can read all of the details here. What we found is that these “free” platforms typically end up costing nonprofits a lot more than platforms that have clear, transparent monthly charges.
If you want deeper CRM functionality, you’ll have to pay for Givebutter Plus, which is priced by contact. Pricing starts at $29 (for 250 contacts) and continues to increase the more contacts you have. Once you hit 5,000 contacts in your database, you’ll get handed off to the sales team for a custom quote.
💡Fun fact:All donor tips through 4aGoodCause go directly to your organization—not the platform.
DonorPerfect pricing
DonorPerfect no longer publishes pricing publicly; you’ll need to request a custom quote. Historically, pricing has been contact-based and tiered by feature set.
On their pricing guide page, they advertise three different tiers: Core, Plus, and Pro. The Core plan offers pretty basic features; moving into Plus means you have more integrations (like Quickbooks) and automations available to use. Pro is enterprise-level software and includes more segmentation and reporting features, as well as custom API access.
Outside of information about the features of these plans, you won’t find any numbers at all on DonorPerfect’s website unless you go through the process of getting a custom quote.
4aGoodCause pricing
4aGoodCause uses a flat monthly fee pricing model with all features included—no per-contact pricing, no platform transaction fees, no long-term contract required.
Grassroots: $99/month—process up to $40K online per year
Growing: $199/month—process up to $200K online per year
Every plan includes unlimited pages, unlimited campaigns, unlimited users, the full Monthly Giving Toolkit, Donor Accounts, our CRM that’s perfectly sized for small to midsize nonprofits, and free customer support. No surprises. Transparent pricing is big for us.

How does 4aGC work alongside Givebutter and DonorPerfect?
I want to be clear that 4aGoodCause doesn’t have to be an either/or decision against every platform in this comparison.
4aGoodCause + Givebutter
These platforms serve similar enough purposes that many organizations won’t need both. That said, it’s possible that some nonprofits use Givebutter for one-off campaigns or events and find they need something more purpose-built for their monthly giving program (like 4aGC) paired with everyday fundraising infrastructure.
If that’s where you are, 4aGoodCause is worth a look as a more complete fundraising home base, including recurring giving.
4aGoodCause + DonorPerfect
This is where things get complicated, and I want to be transparent about it. Because DonorPerfect doesn’t support Zapier, 4aGoodCause cannot currently sync data with their system.
If you’re a DonorPerfect user who loves your database but is frustrated by the donation forms, your options are limited.
If you’re open to a broader conversation about what a transition might look like—using 4aGoodCause’s CRM as your donor management system while gaining access to a significantly stronger fundraising suite—we’re happy to talk through that honestly, including whether it makes sense for your organization’s stage and size. Reviews: What are real users saying about Givebutter, DonorPerfect, and 4aGoodCause?
Both Givebutter and DonorPerfect have solid user reviews on platforms like Capterra and G2. Here are some of the pros and cons worth noting from real users:
Givebutter reviews
Givebutter scores well on major review platforms (4.7 on G2 and 4.8 on Capterra) and has earned genuine appreciation for its user-friendly interface and the range of fundraising goals it supports. The feedback is mostly positive, with the donor tip model being the most consistent point of friction in critical reviews.
Michelle S., Development Director at a small business nonprofit, captures both the pros and the cons of Givebutter in her review. On the one hand, the free version has a lot of valuable features. The down side is that in order for it to be free, the platform comes at a cost to donors, and potentially impacts donor trust:
Michelle S.'s review
Reviewer Staci F., who owns a child day care services organization, gave 5 stars overall but flagged the same donor tip issue as Michelle: “I think the tip set already to 15% is confusing for some people when they check out. Especially elderly people.”
Staci F.'s review
These kinds of honest reviews say a lot. The platform has some great features, but the tip model can be a frustration for otherwise-happy customers.
DonorPerfect reviews
DonorPerfect has a loyal user base and consistently positive reviews on its CRM functionality, reporting, and support. It has 4.4 on G2 and 4.5 on Capterra. The feedback that gets more mixed is around fundraising tools and total cost of the platform.
Amy S., Director of Systems and Engagement at a small nonprofit, gave DonorPerfect 5 stars on G2 for its reporting and donor management depth. She was also straightforward about where the platform falls short: weaker event and peer-to-peer tools, and a pricing structure that requires careful scrutiny before signing.
Amy S.'s review
What stands out across both platforms is that satisfied customers aren’t blind to the limitations; they’ve just decided the benefits outweigh them.
That’s a useful lens for your own evaluation of Givebutter and DonorPerfect (and even 4aGoodCause!)). There’s no one-size-fits-all platform that will work for every nonprofit organization.
Every option out there has pros and cons that could make it a great fit (or a total headache) for an organization. What matters most is finding a platform that aligns with your specific goals.
4aGoodCause Reviews
4aGoodCause has consistently good reviews on external platforms like Capterra (4.7 stars out of 5). Reviewers typically talk about how easy the platform is to use and appreciate the ability to customize fundraising pages and track donor engagement.
In her review, PTO Treasurer Vicky Dasher highlights another consistent theme of 4aGoodCause reviews: customer support. “Anytime support is needed, Ronald is right there to walk us through the issue for a total solution,” she says. Read her full review here:

Working with Ronald at 4aGoodCause has been extremely easy. We are a school system and utilize the platform for our yearly fundraising. Givebutter vs. DonorPerfect vs. 4aGoodCause: Which platform is right for you?
The honest answer depends on where your organization is right now, and what problem you’re actually trying to solve. Each of these nonprofit software platforms has its own strengths and weaknesses. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.
Givebutter might be a good fit if…
You need to launch a fundraiser or event quickly and don’t want to pay a monthly fee upfront
Your fundraising is primarily event-driven — galas, auctions, peer-to-peer campaigns
You’re comfortable with the donor tip model and have thought through how it might affect your donor relationships
You’re locked in with Stripe and don’t need processor flexibility
You want a platform with a wide range of integrations and strong educational content
DonorPerfect might be a good fit if…
Your primary need is a robust, centralized donor database with deep reporting, segmentation, and automation tools
You run significant direct mail programs and need sophisticated list management
You have a dedicated database administrator (or someone comfortable managing a feature-rich CRM)
You’re a mid-size organization that’s past the startup phase and has the budget for a full enterprise CRM
You’ve accepted that the fundraising tools are secondary and you’ll manage that separately—though the integration limitation is worth planning around
4aGoodCause might be your best fit if…
Building or growing a monthly giving program is a priority, and you want a platform actually designed for that… by the way, the average recurring donation on 4aGoodCause is $55/month, compared to $24/month industry-wide.
You want conversion-optimized, customizable fundraising pages your team can manage without technical help—ones that convert at over 2x the industry average (it’s true!)
You want a flat monthly platform fee with all features included and no transaction fees—and the flexibility to choose your own payment processor
You’re a small to mid-size nonprofit that values direct, personal support from people who understand fundraising strategy, not just software support tickets
You want a platform that plays well with other tools and can integrate with your CRM via Zapier (note: not DonorPerfect, due to their Zapier limitation)

Fundraising should feel good—for you and your donors
Givebutter and DonorPerfect are both solid cloud-based nonprofit software options that have earned their place in the nonprofit sector.
Overall, Givebutter could be a great starting point for organizations focused on events and campaigns, especially if getting started fast and keeping upfront costs low is the priority.
DonorPerfect is a genuinely strong CRM for organizations that need deep donor management infrastructure, as long as you are aware of the fundraising tool limitations and the integration constraints.
But if your goal is building a sustainable online fundraising program—one where your donation pages convert, your monthly giving program grows, and your costs stay predictable—that’s exactly what we built 4aGoodCause for.
After 25 years in nonprofit fundraising, we built the platform we always wished existed. We’d love to show you what it can do. (Book a demo.)
