Most nonprofits shop for fundraising software the way they shop for any other tool. You compare donation form options, look at the CRM, check whether the automations will save your team time, and somewhere near the bottom of the list, payment processing gets treated as a checkbox.
But every dollar your donors give flows through that payment setup. When you buy fundraising software, you’re buying financial infrastructure. It deserves the same scrutiny as everything else on your list, and perhaps arguably more.
In this training session, Ronald Pruitt of 4aGoodCause was joined by George Crane, payments pro at Swipesum, the fintech firm that helps businesses and nonprofits untangle their payment costs.

Learn how to tell who owns your merchant account, whether your recurring donors can move with you, and where the fees you can’t see are hiding.
In this session, you’ll explore:
- How a donation actually moves from a donor’s card to your bank account, and which pieces of that chain you can control
- The difference between a built-in payment processor and bringing your own, and what each choice costs you long term
- Why your 501(c)(3) status earns you interchange discounts
- The ten questions to ask a fundraising platform — plus the answer you want to hear for each one
5 top takeaways from the webinar
- Payment processing is financial infrastructure, not a feature. Every gift your donors make travels through it. If it’s the last thing you evaluate, you’re evaluating it in the wrong order.
- Ownership is the thread running through all ten questions. Who holds the merchant account, whose name is on the gateway, where the tokens live… nearly every risk in this space traces back to whether the account is in your organization’s legal name or the platform’s.
- About a quarter of platforms won’t let you migrate recurring donors at all. The Whole Whale Podcast’s review of 33 donation platforms found roughly 25% offer no path to move your recurring donor payment data. If you ever want to switch, that’s the difference between a migration and starting your monthly giving program over.
- Your nonprofit status is worth money at the interchange level. Card brands offer discounted interchange to 501(c)(3) organizations. George’s caution: those savings can be erased by a pricing model that pockets the difference. Ask to see how it’s itemized.
- The name on the donor’s statement affects chargebacks. Unfamiliar statement descriptors correlate strongly with chargebacks. Cross the 1% chargeback threshold and you can face manual review, held funds, or a closed merchant account.
Curious how your donation campaigns would perform with high-conversion pages? 4aGoodCause donation pages convert an average of 27% of visitors, compared to the 11% industry benchmark. Book a demo to see how it works.
Not sure what you’re actually paying? Ask for a statement audit.
George walked us through what a payment statement audit looks like: you hand over your processing statements, and Swipesum reads them line by line to build a health check on how you’re processing now.
It separates what you’re currently paying from pricing you could opt into, verifies that the non-negotiable interchange charges are actually accurate, and shows you the difference in plain numbers.
The audit is free for nonprofits and there’s no obligation attached, so if you’re curious what you’re paying, reach out and we’ll take a look together.
