Givebutter vs. BetterWorld: An Honest Look at Features, Fees, and What Real Users Say
Choosing the right fundraising platform is harder than it looks, especially when so many of them lead with the same promise: free.
If you’ve been comparing Givebutter and BetterWorld, you’ve probably noticed they both market themselves as a zero-cost (or near-zero-cost) online fundraising software option for nonprofit organizations.
On the surface, that sounds great. But “free” in the fundraising software world almost always comes with a cost, and understanding that cost is worth your time.
You already know that every dollar matters. And while these platforms make it easy to get started without a monthly software fee, fundraising tools that run on donor tips can carry some hidden long-term hassles.
Here’s the fine print:
Both Givebutter and BetterWorld rely on optional donor “tips” to fund their platforms. Donors are prompted—sometimes by default—to add a contribution to the software company at checkout. That money goes to the platform, not your mission. And depending on your giving volume and your donors’ behavior, it adds up faster than you’d expect.

Givebutter vs. BetterWorld: Pros and cons
Although I created the 4aGoodCause fundraising platform (and naturally have some bias), I’ll be straight with you: Givebutter is a genuinely solid fundraising software with a great feature set behind it. BetterWorld has its use cases too, though it’s a more narrowly focused platform than its marketing suggests.
My team and I reviewed both platforms and their key features directly (including walking through their real-time live donation forms, pricing pages, and feature documentation) to give you an honest comparison.
In my opinion, here’s how they stack up.
Shared strengths of Givebutter and BetterWorld
Here’s what both platforms have in common:
“Free” plan available (funded through optional donor tips)
Online donation forms and campaign pages
Social media integrations for fundraising
Event ticketing and event pages
Auction capabilities
Standard payment options (credit card, ACH payment, Apple Pay)
Zapier integrations for connecting to other tools
What makes each platform unique
When you look at Givebutter vs. BetterWorld more closely, each has a distinct area of emphasis.
Givebutter’s standout features:
More CRM and donor management tools compared to BetterWorld (though not as comprehensive as other platforms like Bloomerang or Little Green Light
Peer-to-peer fundraising and crowdfunding campaigns
Email marketing integrations and text-to-donate
Team-based campaign donation pages
A more developed, full-featured platform overall
BetterWorld’s standout features:
Stronger focus specifically on live event fundraising tools
Mobile bidding for in-person auctions
Popcorn bidding and text messaging for live events
Paddle raises and specific features for both live and silent auctions
Raffles and giveaways

Are there missing or limiting functionalities of Givebutter and BetterWorld?
While both platforms offer features that can help get online fundraising off the ground, there are a few things worth knowing before you build around either one.
Both platforms retain all donor tips (typically 15%) for themselves—they don’t go to your nonprofit.
BetterWorld’s donor management is very thin. Despite marketing itself as an all-in-one solution, its donor management section is sparse in practice as a real CRM.
Monthly giving is not a priority for either platform. Givebutter supports basic recurring donations. BetterWorld mentions monthly giving (and offers a conversion opportunity for that on their donation forms), but it’s not something they’ve built around.
Neither platform lets you choose your own payment processor or own your processing relationship; this has real implications if you ever want to switch platforms without disrupting your recurring donors.
BetterWorld’s pricing is genuinely confusing. More on that below, but complexity in pricing is rarely easy to navigate long-term.
Givebutter charges for advanced features, including a platform fee if you turn off donor tips, and additional monthly costs for higher contact limits.

Alternative option to Givebutter and BetterWorld: 4aGoodCause (4aGC)

Ease of use for non-technical teams

While Givebutter and BetterWorld both offer tools that can help get online giving started, 4aGC makes it easier to raise more while doing less by prioritizing recurring giving right alongside other traditional fundraising strategies, so you can put your time and energy back into your mission. Here’s what real users think about Givebutter vs. BetterWorld
If you check out software review sites like Capterra and G2, both platforms have generally solid feedback. As of the date of this article:
But a few user reviews and community discussions reveal some real-world friction worth paying attention to, particularly around the donor tip experience and the gap between what platforms promise and what they actually deliver.
Givebutter Reviews
On reddit, some users complain about how confusing the donor tips are for users on Givebutter, noting that donors typically assume the nonprofit is receiving the tip, when in reality it’s the software platform:
Reddit reviews
In a his Givebutter review on G2, Andy S. talks about how much he appreciates the platform’s CRM capabilities, but he also mentions the confusion that donor tips can cause:

BetterWorld Reviews
When it comes to BetterWorld, most of the reviews talk about the perks of using the platform for auctions and event management, which is exactly what it seems built to do.
In her Capterra review, Stephanie P. captures this well, noting that the cost and functionality of the platform for events and auctions works really well for her team. The one con she mentions is the lack of customer support:
Stephanie P.'s review
While BetterWorld generally has positive reviews, some users reported issues with the bidding process during silent auctions, which could be catastrophic as Lee F.’s review on Capterra details:
Lee F.'s review
The overall picture from user reviews is pretty consistent: both Givebutter and BetterWorld earn genuine praise when used for what they were designed to do.
Givebutter users appreciate how user-friendly it is for peer-to-peer campaigns and events, and BetterWorld fans love how quickly they can spin up an auction or raffle.
Where frustration tends to creep in is when organizations start leaning on these tools for more—deeper donation tracking, reporting, or long-term donor engagement—and find themselves bumping up against the ceiling of what these tools offer or technical difficulties. That’s not a knock on either tool; it’s just the honest reality.

The real cost of “no cost” tools like Givebutter and BetterWorld
Okay, let’s talk numbers.
Both Givebutter and BetterWorld are built around a model where the platform is free to nonprofits, and instead, donors are asked to “tip” the software company at checkout. It sounds reasonable in theory. But once you understand what those tips add up to, and where that money is going, the picture looks a little different.
Essentially, the “no cost” platforms are earning tips that are already in your donor’s budget—tips that could be fueling your mission instead.
One note about payment processing before we dive in: Givebutter and BetterWorld run Stripe on the backend, which charges 2.9% + $0.30 for each transaction. Stripe actually offers nonprofits a discounted processing rate lower than 2.9% for many transactions. So effectively both Givebutter and BetterWorld are pocketing the difference when they charge the standard 2.9%.
It’s not the worst offense, but it is worth noting because that adds up over time.
Givebutter’s pricing explained
Givebutter’s free plan has no platform fee for your organization. Instead, donors are prompted to leave an optional tip for Givebutter at checkout, covering the platform’s costs and payment processing fees. According to Givebutter, donors cover these costs 88–95% of the time, depending on your settings.
If you turn off tipping, your costs go up: You’ll pay a platform fee on donations received—1% to 5% depending on donation type and you’ll pay standard payment processing fees (2.9% + $0.30 for credit cards/digital wallets). Givebutter also charges additional monthly fees for advanced features and higher contact limits in their CRM.
Overall, Givebutter pricing gets more complicated as you grow. The free tier is straightforward, but growing organizations often find themselves paying more than expected once they need those extra features.
Their “free forever” plan is funded through optional donor tips, with a default contribution rate that appeared to be around 10% when I tested their donation form directly. On top of that, you’ll pay a standard credit card processing fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction (compared to Givebutter, which waives processing fees when donor tips are enabled).
They also charge an additional 0.25% for fraud protection—something that really should come standard. Add it up, and your effective processing rate on BetterWorld’s free plan is closer to 3.15%.
So on their free plan donors tip to fund the platform and a processing rate above what you’d get going directly through Stripe’s nonprofit pricing.
If you want to remove donor tips, you move to their paid plans, which layer on additional platform fees of 2.2% on donations and 5% on events, auctions, and registrations. There’s a monthly subscription option that can bring the platform fee down to around 1%, but standard processing still applies on top of that. Enterprise pricing is custom.
I’ll be honest: after spending time on their pricing page, I’m still not sure exactly what a nonprofit would pay month to month. That’s a red flag.

Should your nonprofit use a “no cost” platform?
Overall, the “no cost” or free fundraising software platforms can carry higher long-term costs than they first appear. But that doesn’t mean they’re never the right choice.
Here are a couple of scenarios where a tip-based free platform can genuinely make sense:
Brand-new or very small nonprofits: If you’re just starting out and raising less than $1,000 per month online, a tip-based platform with no upfront cost lets you test fundraising campaigns without committing to a monthly fee, which can help you put your budget elsewhere while you find your footing.
One-off or seasonal fundraisers: For a single annual event, holiday drive, gala, or short-term campaign, the absence of a monthly fee is a real advantage. If you only fundraise a few times a year and don’t need the infrastructure of a full platform, that’s a reasonable fit.
Organizations whose primary need is a big annual auction: BetterWorld has genuine event-specific auction software (mobile bidding, live auction management, paddle raises) that might be worth evaluating if a single major in-person event is your main fundraising vehicle. (Though I’d also encourage you to look at purpose-built auction platforms like 32auctions.com, which offer strong event-specific features at a per-event price—and can be used alongside a full-featured fundraising platform for everything else.)
Givebutter vs. BetterWorld vs. 4aGoodCause: What makes sense for you?
I’ve been supporting nonprofit organizations for over 25 years, and truly, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution here.
Here’s my quick roundup based on my experience and direct review of each platform:
Choose Givebutter if: You’re a newer or smaller nonprofit raising less than $1,000/month online, running occasional one-off campaigns, or need a free starting point while you build fundraising momentum. Givebutter is the stronger overall platform of the two here—it has a real feature set and a track record. Just understand the donor-tip model before you grow into it.
Choose BetterWorld if: Your fundraising centers almost entirely on a single large in-person event per year—specifically one with live auction, mobile bidding, and paddle raise components. For that narrow use case, their event toolkit is worth exploring. Outside of that, the platform is thin, and the pricing structure is hard to navigate. If Givebutter also covers your event management needs (it has auction capabilities too), I’d start there before considering BetterWorld.
Choose 4aGoodCause if: You’re processing more than $1,000/month online, you want to launch or grow your monthly giving program alongside traditional fundraising strategies (like events and P2P fundraising), or you want a true all-in-one platform. 4aGC’s flat-fee model, donor tips that go to your organization, and your ownership of your processing relationship make it a fundamentally different value proposition—one built for long-term fundraising success, not just getting started.
While the donor-tip-based models work well for seasonal or one-off fundraising events, 4aGoodCause supports long-term fundraising success through:
Transparent pricing (flat monthly fee, no transaction fees on donations)
Optional donor tips that go to your organization—not us
Donor Accounts so your supporters can manage their own giving and save your team time
A light, user-friendly CRM for tracking donor engagement all in one place
Payment processing ownership—you own your payment processor relationship, so your monthly donor data stays with you if you ever move platforms
Personal customer service from a small support team that actually picks up the phone
