Why Donorbox might not be the right fit
Before we dive into alternatives, let me share what I’ve learned about Donorbox from working with nonprofits over the years.
Donorbox is genuinely good at certain things—particularly for international nonprofits that need multi-currency and multi-language support. Their donation widget is easy to set up, and they offer unique features like donation kiosks and a tap-to-pay integration. If those are features that really matter to your organization, Donorbox can be a fit.
But here’s what I’ve observed
- The pricing adds up quickly. While there’s a “free” plan, many essential features are locked behind paid tiers ($150/month for Pro). And you’re still paying a 2% platform fee on top of Stripe processing fees. For events and peer-to-peer fundraising features, those platform fees jump to nearly 4%.
- The widget creates conversion problems. When you embed the Donorbox widget on your website page, you’re surrounded by navigation menus, footer links, and other distractions. Donors can click away at any moment. The multi-step checkout process also hurts conversion rates.
- The CRM side is surprisingly light. If you need robust donor management, Donorbox won’t get you there. It’s a donation platform, not a comprehensive nonprofit CRM.
- Event ticketing features are lacking or clunky. I’ve heard this directly from some of my current clients. Check out A Case Study of Foreknown Ministries’ Wave of Light Event, where one of our 4aGC clients candidly talks about the challenges and why they made the switch to 4aGC.
- Customer support isn’t their strong suit. Priority support is only available at the highest pricing tier, and I’ve heard consistent feedback that response times can be slow.
For small to mid-size nonprofits focused on growing monthly giving, building donor relationships, hosting fundraising events, and keeping costs predictable, there are better options.
What tools do small to midsize nonprofits actually need?
Most fundraising software options are built for big organizations with dedicated IT teams, enterprise budgets, and complex donor databases.
But if you’re a small to mid-size nonprofit, you probably don’t have:
- A full-time technology person on staff
- $500+ per month to spend on software
- Time to manage complicated integrations or learn clunky workflows
- Patience for “contact us for pricing” or surprise add-on fees
You need tools that are:
- Easy to use without a tech degree
- Affordable and transparent about costs
- Scalable as you grow
- Supportive when you need help
- Donor-focused to make giving extra easy and intuitive
That’s the lens we’re using to compare these platforms.
Alternative #1: 4aGoodCause (4aGC)
4aGoodCause was built based on my 25+ years of watching small nonprofits struggle with platforms that either cost too much, hide fees in confusing pricing models, or make monthly giving programs harder than they needed to be.
4aGC is designed specifically for small to mid-size nonprofits that want to:
- Have a full campaign toolkit in one place—event registration, peer-to-peer fundraising, text-to-donate, crowdfunding, donor CRM, and more fundraising marketing tools
- Start or grow a monthly giving program (learn more about the benefits of recurring giving)
- Keep more of every dollar raised—you keep all donor tips, and they’re optional
- Get real human support without waiting days for a response
- Use a platform that’s simple enough for non-technical teams
Alternative #2: Givebutter
Givebutter markets itself as an all-in-one platform; they want to be everything to everybody. The Givebutter brand is playful and fun, and they offer a massive toolkit for different types of fundraising—peer-to-peer fundraising, events, email marketing, and more.
Key features
- Peer-to-peer fundraising campaigns
- Event registration and ticketing
- Crowdfunding campaigns
- Email marketing tools
- Basic CRM functionality (upgraded with “Givebutter Plus”)
- Text-to-give options
- Team-based campaign pages
Pricing breakdown
- Platform fee: “Free” – funded by donor tips, typically preset at 15-22% for small donations (3% platform fee when tips are turned off)
- Butter Plus (CRM features): Paid tier based on number of contacts ($129/mo for 2,500 constituents in your donor database, for example)
- Payment processing: Stripe fees apply when donor tips are turned off (2.9% + $0.30)
- Donor tips: Kept by Givebutter, not your nonprofit
If you want CRM features, you’ll have to add on Givebutter Plus, which is an additional paid tier based on the number of constituents in your donor database. And as your database grows, so does your software cost.
What Givebutter does well
- Feature-rich: Lots of tools for different fundraising scenarios
- No upfront software cost: Good for testing fundraising campaigns without financial commitment
- Modern interface: Clean, user-friendly dashboards
- Peer-to-peer campaigns: Strong tools for supporter-led fundraising
Givebutter limitations
- Donor tips can confuse donors: Multiple user reviews mention donors feeling misled by pre-selected tips that aren’t clearly labeled
- CRM costs add up: If you want to use Givebutter as a full CRM, the per-contact pricing gets expensive fast
- Tips don’t go to your mission: All donor tips fund Givebutter’s operations, not your programs
- You’re locked into Stripe: Can’t bring your own payment processor or negotiate better rates
Givebutter user reviews
Givebutter reviews are positive at a high level: Users highlight how easy the platform is to use, how quickly you can launch campaigns, and how much value you get from the “free” all-in-one model.
The donor tip model is one of the most frequently mentioned pain points. Miranda T. talks about this specific issue in her G2 review: “I cannot customize certain items such as removing tips and donations from events. We have had a few donors who didn’t notice and thought that we had taken extra money for a donation without their permission.”
This dynamic can create a frustrating and sometimes confusing experience for donors. While the tip is technically optional, the way it’s presented during checkout can make it feel less transparent than many organizations would like. Some donors don’t immediately realize where their money is going—or that they need to adjust multiple fields to opt out—leading to moments of hesitation or mistrust at a critical point in the giving process.
As one donor on reddit shared:
“Adding a $24 charge on a $160 order + adding processing fees seems kind of high (and greedy) – especially when it said the money goes to Givebutter – not the charity you are supporting. I opted out of the tip after a few clicks, but didn’t notice I could change the processing fee. By default the take for givebutter is over 18% unless the end user figures out how to change each of the charges.”
Some users report limitations around customization, templates, integrations, or more advanced features—meaning that as your organization grows, you may need to invest in additional tools or workarounds to get the flexibility you need.
Ilse E., an account manager, says: “While Givebutter is a great platform overall, one thing I found challenging was the limited customization options for campaign pages. A bit more flexibility in design and layout would make it even better.”
Givebutter could be a solid option for nonprofits that prioritize ease of use and low upfront cost, but the reliance on donor tips and limitations around advanced functionality can become more noticeable as organizations scale.

Alternative #3: Zeffy
Zeffy employs the “free platform” concept like Givebutter.
It’s a bold promise: Truly zero fees for nonprofits. But like most “free” platforms, it’s not without trade-offs—Zeffy is funded entirely by optional donor tips added during checkout.
Key features
- Online donation forms
- Event registration and event ticketing features
- Peer-to-peer fundraising
- Raffles and lotteries
- Basic email tools
- Membership management
Pricing breakdown
- Platform fee: $0
- Payment processing fees: $0 (covered by donor tips)
- Donor tips: Typically preset at 15-22% for small donations, with Zeffy keeping 100% of tips
What Zeffy does well
- Truly zero fees: Processing fees are covered, not just platform fees
- Simple setup: Easy to get started for brand-new nonprofits
- Raffles and lotteries: Unique feature for fundraising variety
Zeffy limitations
- Donor tips can create friction: Suggested tips (often 15–17%) are pre-selected, which can confuse or frustrate donors and impact trust
- Limited customization and integrations: Users report challenges with more complex campaigns or connecting to other tools
- Payout timing and control: Some users note delays or limited payout options compared to platforms where you control your own payment processing
Here’s what I want you to understand about Zeffy:
When you use Zeffy, they become your merchant of record. That means:
- You don’t own your own Stripe account
- You can’t take your donor payment data if you leave
- Zeffy holds your money before paying you out
- Your nonprofit name doesn’t appear on donor credit card statements—Zeffy’s does
This setup can create confusion for donors, especially when they don’t immediately recognize the charge on their statement. And from an operational standpoint, it limits your control and flexibility as your organization grows.
When someone else controls your payment processing, you’re taking on risk—and giving up ownership of one of your most important assets: your donor relationships.
⭐️ Your donors should stay yours. With 4aGoodCause, your organization is the merchant of record. That means your recurring donor data is stored securely in your payment gateway—not locked in our system—so you own your donor relationships. Not us.
Zeffy user reviews
Zeffy reviews are largely positive, especially among small nonprofits looking for a truly no-cost fundraising platform. Many organizations appreciate being able to run simple campaigns, events, and donation forms without worrying about monthly subscriptions or transaction costs.
That said, the donor tip model is the most common concern in reviews—and it’s central to how Zeffy works. Because the platform is entirely funded by optional donor tips, contributors are prompted to add a percentage-based tip during checkout (often around 15–17%).
An anonymous verified G2 reviewer notes: “Any time anyone makes a donation or buys a ticket on Zeffy, the form automatically adds on a donation to Zeffy, and it is not immediately apparent that the user can choose to reduce or omit the donation. This seems sneaky and like a hidden fee.”
There are also trade-offs that come with any “free” platform. Because Zeffy doesn’t charge nonprofits directly, it may not offer the same depth of features, customization, or advanced tools as paid platforms—especially as organizations grow or need more sophisticated reporting, integrations, or fundraising capabilities.
Pam K. a board co-chair, shares this sentiment in her Capterra review: “I wish Zeffy would integrate with Canva. I also wish that there were more editable settings, for instance font and background colors, for invitations. I also wish there was live customer service.”
Overall, reviews suggest Zeffy is a good entry-level option for nonprofits focused on minimizing costs, but the reliance on donor tips and the limitations of a free model can become more noticeable as your organization—and your fundraising strategy—evolves.
💡Fun fact: All donor tips through 4aGoodCause go directly to your organization—not the platform.
Alternative #4: Bloomerang
Bloomerang is a donor CRM first, fundraising platform second. They’re known for putting donor retention at the center of everything they do.
If you’re a small nonprofit that wants to track donor relationships, engagement, and giving history in depth, Bloomerang offers solid tools.
Key features
- Comprehensive donor database and CRM
- Donor retention tracking and reporting
- Email marketing and communications
- Online donation forms
- Wealth screening tools
- Native integrations with email marketing software (MailChimp and Constant Contact) and accounting software (Quickbooks)
Pricing breakdown
- Starting price: Around $125/month for their CRM
- Pricing model: Based on number of donor records
- Extra Costs for add-ons: If you want volunteer or fundraising features for online giving, those modules cost extra (starting price is $119/month for Bloomerang Volunteer and $40/month for Bloomerang Fundraising)
- Payment processing: Separate fees apply
What Bloomerang does well
- Donor retention focus: Built specifically to help nonprofits keep donors engaged
- Robust reporting: Strong analytics on donor behavior and giving patterns
- Good reputation: Well-regarded in the nonprofit sector for CRM capabilities
Bloomerang limitations
- Costs increase as you grow: Pricing scales with your database, which can get expensive over time
- Customer support can be inconsistent: Some users report great experiences, while others mention slow or less helpful responses
- Limited customization: May not offer the flexibility larger or more complex organizations need
How 4aGoodCause works with Bloomerang
Here’s something important: 4aGoodCause integrates beautifully with Bloomerang.
We have clients who use Bloomerang as their donor CRM and 4aGoodCause for all their fundraising pages and monthly giving programs. It’s a powerful combination:
- Bloomerang handles the donor database and relationship management
- 4aGoodCause handles online fundraising and recurring giving
- Data flows between the platforms via Zapier
If you’re already using Bloomerang and love it, you don’t have to choose. You can pair it with 4aGC for the more robust, easy-to-use fundraising features, which works really smoothly for a lot of nonprofits.
Bloomerang user reviews
Bloomerang reviews are consistently strong, especially when it comes to donor engagement and retention. The platform is built specifically with retention in mind, with features like engagement scoring, retention metrics, and detailed donor timelines that help nonprofits understand who their supporters are and when to reach out.
Ease of use and customer support are two other standout themes in reviews. Users frequently describe the platform as modern and easy to learn—especially compared to more complex CRMs—while also calling out responsive, hands-on support and training resources.
In her G2 review, Angeleah O. notes how “the constituent timelines and dashboards provide a clear view of giving history and engagement, which helps our team better understand and steward our donors. I also appreciate the strong reporting capabilities and responsive customer support, which make it easier to get the data we need and resolve questions quickly for our Engagement team.”
Some reviewers do note limitations around customization or more advanced features, particularly for larger organizations with complex needs. Vanessa T. points out in her review that there “are features that are not customizable just yet.” She specifically mentions the email feature, which she says “could use some more templates [to] make it easier to customize designs.”
Still, overall feedback suggests Bloomerang is a strong fit for nonprofits that want a donor-focused CRM with powerful retention tools, solid integrations, and a user-friendly experience that supports long-term growth.

Alternative #5: Little Green Light (LGL)
Little Green Light is one of the most affordable donor CRMs on the market. It’s built for small nonprofits that need donor management tools without breaking the bank.
Key features
- Donor database and donation management
- Donation tracking, reporting, and automation features
- Email marketing tools
- Volunteer management
- Direct mail tools
- Online donation forms (via LGL Forms)
Pricing breakdown
- Starting price: $45/mo for up to 2,500 contacts
- Pricing scales: Based on number of contacts in your database
- Value: One of the most affordable donor management systems available
What Little Green Light does well
- Affordable CRM: Budget-friendly option for donor database management
- Contact tracking: Solid tools for managing donor information
- Email and mail tools: Built-in communication features
Little Green Light limitations
Little Green Light is a CRM, not a fundraising platform.
They have something called “LGL Forms” for online donations, but based on my experience helping nonprofits migrate from LGL to 4aGC, these forms are:
- Complicated to build
- Not user-friendly for donors (multi-step process, not intuitive)
- Limited in functionality compared to dedicated fundraising platforms
- Missing modern payment methods (like DAF Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay unless you configure Stripe yourself)
- Not built for monthly giving success (no upgrade links, retention tools, etc.)
LGL is great at what it does: managing donor data. But for online fundraising? You’ll likely want something else.
How 4aGoodCause works with Little Green Light
Just like Bloomerang, 4aGoodCause pairs perfectly with Little Green Light.
We have multiple clients who use this combination, and it streamlines their fundraising efforts. They use Little Green Light for their donor database, and 4aGoodCause for their fundraising pages and monthly giving initiatives. Integration happens seamlessly with Zapier. It’s a hybrid approach that is really powerful, especially for small nonprofits wanting the best of both worlds.
Little Green Light User Reviews
Little Green Light reviews are consistently positive, especially among small to mid-sized nonprofits looking for an affordable, no-frills CRM that simply works. Users frequently highlight its strong value for money, with pricing that’s significantly lower than many competitors while still delivering the core tools needed to manage donors, track gifts, and run reports.
Joseph M., an executive director, praises Little Green Light in his Capterra review: “It’s easy to use, features great reports (including many available at all times on the dashboard), with lots of flexibility. LGL also has an excellent knowledgebase, live remote Q&A sessions, and a rapid response email help line.” Notably, he points out that Little Green Light is about “1/3 of the cost” of his previous software.
Many nonprofits find success pairing it with dedicated fundraising tools like 4aGoodCause, allowing them to combine a simple, affordable CRM with more robust donation and campaign functionality.
Devin J. has had a great experience integrating Little Green Light with other software, as mentioned in this review: “Little Green Light is low-cost and perfectly right-sized for an organization of our size. It is relatively flexible and intuitive, and with the help of 3rd party tools can be easily connected to other software.”
Overall, reviews suggest Little Green Light is a reliable, budget-friendly foundation for donor management—especially for organizations that value simplicity and flexibility. While it may not have the advanced features of enterprise-level systems, its affordability and ability to integrate with other tools make it a practical, scalable choice for nonprofits building a tech stack that can grow with them.

FAQ for small to midsize nonprofits considering a switch from Donorbox
We’ve compiled some of the most common questions small to midsize nonprofits have when they are exploring other nonprofit software options.
Don’t see your question here? I’ve got 25+ years of experience in supporting nonprofits. Feel free to contact me!
- Can I switch from Donorbox to another platform without losing my donor data?
- Should small nonprofits prioritize a CRM or a fundraising platform?
- What’s wrong with embedded donation widgets like Donorbox uses?
- Can I use 4aGoodCause with my existing donor management system?
- What happens to my monthly donors if I switch platforms?
- How do I know if my nonprofit is ready for monthly giving?
- Can I try 4aGoodCause before committing?
1. Can I switch from Donorbox to another platform without losing my donor data?
Yes—most platforms allow you to export donor data, including Donorbox. That means you can take your donor contact information, giving history, and other key records with you if you decide to switch.
However, you can’t always transfer recurring donor payment tokens (the saved credit card information that processes monthly gifts). That depends on who owns that information: your nonprofit or your software platform. If you don’t own your donor tokens and decide to switch platforms, monthly donors will need to re-enter their payment information on your new platform.
It’s always worth confirming the details of your specific setup with Donorbox before migrating—especially around what data you can export and how your payment processing is configured. Not all accounts are set up the same way, and it’s important not to make assumptions when planning a transition.
Platforms like 4aGoodCause can help you manage this transition smoothly with donor communication templates and migration support. Plus, with 4aGoodCause, you always own your payment processing and donor tokens.
2. Should small nonprofits prioritize a CRM or a fundraising platform?
It depends on your current needs. If you’re struggling to collect online donations and don’t have a monthly giving program, start with a fundraising platform like 4aGoodCause. If you already have fundraising figured out but can’t track donor relationships effectively, add a CRM like Bloomerang or Little Green Light.
The good news? If you’re just starting out, you can begin with 4aGoodCause and easily integrate with other tools as you need to, thanks to our seamless integration with Zapier.
Embedded widgets have a fundamental problem: distractions. When the donation form is embedded on a page with your website navigation, footer links, and other elements, donors can easily click away. Every distraction hurts conversion rates. Additionally, multi-step checkout processes (clicking “next” multiple times) create more opportunities for donors to abandon their gift. Standalone donation pages or pop-up donation forms eliminate these issues.
4. Can I use 4aGoodCause with my existing donor management system?
Yes! 4aGoodCause integrates with popular donor CRMs like Bloomerang, Little Green Light, and others via Zapier. Many of our clients use 4aGC for all fundraising and monthly giving, then sync donation data to their existing CRM.
It’s a really seamless system that works for a lot of small to midsize nonprofits who want best-in-class tools for an affordable price.
📚Learn more: What’s the difference between Bloomerang and Little Green Light? We’ve published a full guide here: Bloomerang vs. Little Green Light.
5. What happens to my monthly donors if I switch platforms?
If you don’t own your payment processing and donor tokens, then any monthly donors will need to re-enter their payment information on the new platform. However, with proper communication and transition planning, most monthly donors continue giving.
At 4aGoodCause, we provide migration support including donor communication templates and best practices to minimize disruption during platform switches. We have experience migrating recurring donors from Donorbox.
And with 4aGoodCause, you own your payment processing and donor relationships, which means if you ever switch, you take all of that information with you seamlessly, without the risk of losing any donors.
6. How do I know if my nonprofit is ready for monthly giving?
If you have any active donors giving at least once per year, you’re ready for monthly giving. It’s one of the most effective fundraising strategies for small to mid-size nonprofits.
Monthly donors give 2.4X more than one-time donors on average, and the average monthly donor gives $660 per year on the 4aGoodCause platform. Learn more about starting a monthly giving program here.
7. Can I try 4aGoodCause before committing?

You don’t need to work harder to raise more. The right platform helps.
Choosing fundraising software is a big decision—and it should be.
Your platform affects how donors experience your nonprofit, how much you pay in fees, and whether you can grow monthly giving successfully.
Here’s what I know after all my years in nonprofit fundraising:
- Embedded forms hurt conversion rates—standalone pages (and pop-up forms) perform better
- Per-transaction platform fees add up quickly—flat pricing is more predictable
- “Free” platforms aren’t actually free—our in-depth cost analysis found that “free platforms” have an effective cost of 12.75%, compared to an effective cost of 1.78% with 4aGC
- Donor tips should go to your mission, not to software companies
- Monthly giving transforms small nonprofits
- Real human support matters when you’re learning new tools
At 4aGoodCause, we built a platform for nonprofits like yours—teams that want to raise more, keep more, and stress less.
If you’re ready to:
- Launch or grow a monthly giving program
- Keep 100% of donor tips for your mission
- Get transparent, predictable pricing
- Use standalone pages that convert better than widgets
- Access real people for support and strategy
- Use tools designed for small to mid-size nonprofits

Final Note:
We support any platform that helps nonprofits succeed. Donorbox, Givebutter, Zeffy, Bloomerang, and Little Green Light all have their place in the nonprofit technology landscape—and for some organizations, they’re the right choice.
But if you want transparent pricing, no per-transaction fees, donor-first design, robust monthly giving tools, and a team that genuinely cares about your success, we’d love to show you what 4aGoodCause can do.
