P2P fundraising: 11 events that work for getting large groups involved

Looking for some new ways to spice up your peer-to-peer (P2P) fundraising game? We have a few P2P event resources for you. First up, here’s a list of 11 events that pair well with P2P giving.

Events that pair well with P2P

1. Bowl-a-thon

Participants get teams together to raise money online and then have a fun night of in-person bowling and competition together to support your good cause.

2. Casino night

These events typically have a registration or participation fee attached. Attendees can then play with “fun money” to gamble on certain games and events throughout the night. The more money they raise, the more “fun money” they get to play with at the casino.

3. Bike-a-thon

Bike for a cause! The great thing about this is you can do bike-a-thons in person or virtually if participants have a stationary bike at home.

4. Online challenge or activity

Think push-up challenge, treadmill races, game night, group exercise, etc.

5. Awareness campaign

Take a specific program or value your nonprofit stands for and raise money through P2P giving. Could be around depression and mental health awareness, combating teenage drug use or finding a cure for a particular disease.

6. Tributes and memorials

Take tribute and memorial giving to the next level by making them larger P2P events. This can work especially well if there is a long-time donor, special member of the community or well-known person to be honored.

7. Classroom challenges

Schools can have fun with this one by having contests between grades or classrooms. Have fun with classroom challenges and have each student or class create landing pages to collect donations along the way.

8. Readathon

Another school-related event, collect money from donors based on how many pages or books participant read. Take it to another level by including a challenge for how many different genres participants can read during the campaign time period.

9. Dance-off

Much like a bowl-a-thon or bike-a-thon, a dance-off takes things to another level. You could compete as groups, as couples, as individuals. You can see how long participants to remain on the dance floor, who knows the choreography to certain songs—this is a fun one for those who like to move while supporting your cause.

10. Run/walk-a-thon

Not into dancing? Your participants can still get a move on by participating in a run or walk-a-thon. Create themed water stations, give away fun prizes and have participants collect donations based on the number of miles or steps they’ll complete during the event.

11. Celebration campaigns

Weddings, baby showers, anniversaries—there’s something to be said about tying these milestones to fundraisers to support a cause that is near and dear to the honorees’ hearts.

Communicating during P2P events

One of the reasons that P2P fundraising works so well is that we trust our peers—if our friend or family member encourages us to give to an organization, we’re more apt to do so because we trust their judgment and want to support the things that are important to them.

There are also some important communication pieces to develop as an organization for your P2P fundraising events. Download our free P2P call-to-action checklist to stay on track and engage with your donors throughout your campaign.
